Arr, 'tis a fine set me hearty

I bought this set to build with my 4 year old son, and it was an absolute blast. We spent two days building it, and have been playing it with it for another two days since.
This set has an incredible amount of detail, which allows for a wide variety of fun scenarios. There is an awesome amount of weapons, food, tools, and animals included in this set. We really like th below deck rooms, especially the captains quarters. Also, the sails are epic when fully assembled. The shipwreck island also adds more fun nooks and potential setups.
My only minor complaint is that the sand, water, and deck near the sunken statue doesn't stay together very well for us while playing. But, it's with a 4 year old, your milage may vary. Overall, it's super fun, it's clear that there was a lot of passion put into designing this set!

Fantastic Set

I absolutely love this set. It is much bigger than I thought it would be (which is NOT a complaint!). You 1st build it as the shipwreck. You can then change it over to a complete ship by removing some parts and adding some new ones. Let me warn you, tho... if you decide you want to change it from a complete ship back to the shipwreck, be prepared for some frustration! It is fairly simple to go from shipwreck to complete ship. BUT going back to the shipwreck is not as simple as just reversing the steps. I don't think it was really designed to change back. It was a pain (for me, anyway)! I personally prefer the shipwreck setup.

One of the best.

As far as the sets I've seen and have been able to get, this is probably the best out of them all. It is just impressive, no matter how you look at it. The baseplate building alone is so much fun and I don't normally enjoy building the bases too much. The little hidden features were terrific and the visible features are even better. The elephant statue! The trees! The dock and stairs! I didn't even get to the ship part before I fell in love with this set. I haven't put together the ship as a whole but as the shipwreck, it's just the greatest. I would just stare and stare at it. The entire build was a blast (LIKE THE CANNONS GET IT OH GOD) and will probably stand the test of time as one of Lego's greatest sets. Although, if I had to nitpick, it would be to have been able to see inside the rooms and stuff, especially the bar and the beds. Great interior details but you can't really see them! But there is a joy in that, at least. I would love another set like this, a sister shipwreck set or something! Anyways. Kudos on this one. If I was a kid, holy cow, this would be the best thing ever.

Great Build Experience, Amazing Display
on August 16, 2020

I purchased this for my wife and myself for some fun building a big project that wasn’t Star Wars. This was perfect, it was a very fun build digging into all the clever ways the designers created the beautiful scenery and structures. The display quality and value are through the roof on this set. I don’t exactly play with these sets at my age, but the posing and gazing time spent in this set far exceeds anything else I own. I fear this set will cause undeserved disappointment in future sets I buy, whom all will be compared to after this.

Nostalgia at its best, imagination at its finest!

I bought this for my family (fiancé, son, and myself) to build together. We have been stuck on LEGO Star Wars, but I was ready to return to a classic LEGO set. Building this brought back so many fond memories of growing up. I remember building a smaller pirate ship when I was about 10, and only dreamed of a set this interactive, intricate, and large. Each mini figure has such character, and my 6 year old son and I had such an amazing time naming them as we built. We developed our own adventure story by the time we completed it, and it led to an entire evening of LEGO fun and immersive playing. Can’t wait to reassemble and set sail once we are done playing the shipwrecked version.

The best set of 2020 to me
on June 1, 2021

To put simply, everything about this set is amazing to me. The build is very well done and have so much room for minifigs and playability, and it's very well done how you can remove all the ship chunks and make a full pirate ship. The minifig selection is incredible as about half of theme are exclusive in some way, and they all look good. The value is extremely good. The build is larger than it seems on the box, and it has an incredibly high number of large pieces that it feels like it could've been much more expensive than it is. The only small issue is that I feel it could be a bit easier to remove the chunks of the ship and rebuilt it to a ship and vice versa. But other than that small thing, this set is incredible, and I recommend it if you can get it over anything available right now

Thyroid eye disease & pirates
on December 12, 2021

I cannot express what this set meant to me. As was going blind, from optic nerve compression with TED. Scheduling surgery, because Covid-19 pandemic halted production of drug needed... Lego was my refuge. Being led from dr. office, hearing this insane news, I announced, "I want a Lego pirate set." And so... I built it through the half-light, missing-colors of diseased sight. Feeling each brick in fingers, counting dot #s, hearing the locking, "clicks." I built it through my decision to cancel surgery, when infusion center phoned that drug was available again. I rearranged & imagined adventures in Barracuda Bay, when I couldn't drive & wore an eye patch to combat double-vision. I developed a fondness for pineapple & coconut flavors. Warm & happy, pirate flavors. As months of drug infusions followed. As side-effects came & went. I added extra figures to the set, for fun & a modicum of control over something. I loved the colors even more, as sight slowly crept back. The detailed pirate costumes, the pink pig, the red/white striped sails. Oh, those feathered plumes & sparkly jewels! The tiny letters & maps, which I couldn't understand as such, when building. The flowers, the ocean, the kitchen with tiny fruits & pots. Today I keep this set, as island-version, on my desk. Still mix coconut extract into coffee. And rearrange/play with it regularly. I remember how its joy & ideas healed a terrified part of my soul. When I needed to escape into a more beautiful & silly world for awhile. I'll be eternally grateful. Even not wearing my eye patch anymore, I remain a Lego pirate @ heart. Forever.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

They brought back the 1989 Pirates!!

Bought this set for my brother's birthday (little did he know I wanted it) and as soon as it came in the mail he couldn't believe his eyes. The thing I love most about this set is either the price (knowing this is such a big set) or the classic references, let me explain; the set you see before you for one can be re-built into a pirate ship, but not just any ship the Black Seas Barracuda! And that just so happens to be the classic throwback from Pirates 1. It's not just the ship either, the Minifigures are mostly the same too! There is just so much I love about it! and it looks amazing on display!
