A Perfect Pirate Set!
on April 18, 2020
Posted by: LordBlackadder
Ever since this set appeared on Lego Ideas, I supported and followed its progress eagerly. Having missed out on the earlier Pirate sets in the past 2+ decades, I immediately purchased this set as soon as it was available. When I received the set, I was not disappointed. Its packaging, shear size and weight do a very good job of impressing upon you that your money was well-spent.
For someone like me who likes to display built sets, the Pirates of Barracuda Bay is the perfect display set, especially in the island configuration; although, it displays only well from the front--at least for me. This set has all the elements/details that will appease even the most attentive collector--captain's quarters, crew sleeping area, kitchen, etc. For the minifigures, you are provided with enough to populate the island so it looks quite lively. I particularly liked the individuality and uniqueness of each figure.
If you are looking for the perfect Pirates set, then this is a must own, especially if you missed out on the sets that were released over the past few years. Just don't do what I did and build an older set (The Brick Bounty 70413) after building this set--personally, I was hugely disappointed and immediately broke it down and sold it. Maybe I should only compare this set with say the Imperial Flagship (10210) in terms of complexity. But regardless, I'd say this is a set that will remain in my possession for many years to come--the Pirates theme along with a perfect blend of build complexity and attention to detail will ensure that it will have a hard time feeling out of date far into the future.
Now, if only they can resurrect the Adventurers theme in a similar manner..... Lego? Lego Ideas? Anyone? Please?

The most underrated set

I have seen it many times in a local shop but it never caught my eye because it looked like a hodge-podge of piraty lego chunks and somehow it didn't appeal to me. Boy was I wrong! I never quite realized a ship wreck can be easily constructed into a ship, so when I found that out (purely by chance, on internet) I went ahead and purchased it.
I honestly think no picture can do it's justice. I do believe it's the best set LEGO has ever made, and the best ship by far. The amount of detail is unbelievable, the ship's interior is fully designed, you get everything you need: few cots for sailors, kitchen with a stove, a couple tables, a bar with a bar stand and a barrel of beer, and even a gorgeous captain room!
The wreck variant is amazing as well, I looks so much better in real life than in the picture. It feels cozy and detailed and believable, you want to become a lego minifigure yourself and live in this universe for a day.
On top of everything, it was a joy to build too! No repetitive parts, very well ordered.
It's amazing to look at in its both variants, it's amazing to play with, if you still unsure: buy it, you won't regret. Had I had such a set when I was a kid, I would die of endorphins overdose.

The Barracuda is back!

I was very excited when I saw this set as “Coming Soon” and got it as soon as it was released. The Black Seas Barracuda has always been my favorite set and I thought that this set paid great homage to the best Lego set ever made. Building this set was pure nostalgia. The details were amazing, and I loved the classic box styling and that Tattooga had a tattoo of the original Black Seas Barracuda on his back. The statue head from the Islanders and the Imperial guard relics were nice touches as well. Great job! Thanks to all of you that made this set happen!

Awesome set!

This set is a super fun build and a amazing looking set, it’s also really big. The transformation from island to ship is really fast and it looks amazing both ways. Some people think that this set should have had pins to hold both sides together, I disagree because pins would have made it more difficult to examine all sides of the build. Also pins can make it hard to push a set together and sometimes sets break in the process. Please bring back classic pirates!

Awesome for the hole family.

I first got Legos when I was a kid in the 90's and now have two kids of my own (5 and 7 years old). This was a great set to build for how intricate it was and also having the kids help build and help them build it. Even got the wife building it. Everyone loved it. It looks amazing. Really happy I have some of the old pirate sets to combine with it. Really like what Lego is doing with Lego Ideas. Highly recommend.
Picture has extra pieces, like more sharks, monkey, pirates, and barrels.

The Playground-Fort of Your Childhood Dreams

Pictures do not do this justice. When I saw the rendition made, I thought it strayed too far away from the original design. But the end result is one of the best display models you could ask for. The size is great, there are a ton of details so that no space feels empty, the crew is spectacular, and there are enough extra pieces (swords, guns, vegetation, etc) that you can add more minifigures and create with purpose. Even when you build the Barracuda, the land leftover is great as is, or the start of your own pirate port. Get it at your earliest convenience. You won't regret it

TLG, You Could Have a Hidden Gem Opportunity Here!
on April 20, 2020

As an AFoL, this set took me back to my childhood of 80s and 90s! I really wanted the original BSB but it was out of budget for my family. Through this set, I finally got the BSB and it is amazing! Such a great set with duel functionality. Ship or a shipwrecked island- you decide!
Judging from other reviews and accolades over this set, TLG could do something spectacular with the original themes that many of the AFoL are familiar with... Building upon the obvious success of Barracuda Bay and the successes with the Lego Modular Buildings, I would be highly interested in seeing more original themed sets like these come to fruition!
I mean, how cool would it be to see a Pirates, Castle and even Space themed sets- of course, parallel to the caliber of Barracuda Bay and the Modular Buildings come out once a year!?! I'd Buy! Release the Modular Building in Jan, Pirates set in April and Castle set in August... I think many Lego fans old and young would be all over it!
How amazing it could be to see new iterations of other classic sets with the scale and level of details as in Barracuda Bay: The Caribbean Clipper, Skull's Eye Schooner, Imperial Flagship, Fort Eldorado, Imperial Trading Post, Forbidden Island, Rock Island Refuge, Enchanted Island, etc. Or reimagine smaller sets at this more grand scale: Renegade Runner, Imperial Outpost, Cannon Cove, Skull Island, etc.
Think about it TLG, you could really have a special opportunity here! ;)
As you can tell, this set really brought me back and has me craving more!
Way to go to the Lego Ideas team that worked on this project! Thank you!

Expected great. Was even better

I was looking for something fun to build this summer and a pirate beach seemed to fit the bill. I wasn't that interested in building the ship but the wreck interested me. First surprise was that you don't have to choose. The boat pieces come off the beach easily to make the ship. I was also expecting a medium sized ship and a large island. It's actually a large ship and a massive island. The pictures don't do it justice, especially how deep it goes.
My only complaint is that so much of the really cool details inside the ship get covered up because it's enclosed, but what are you going to do? It's a ship.
