Good Grill - with a few reservations

I have had this grill for about 4 years. Cooked mostly burgers, brats, chicken & fish. I recently re-polished the outside stainless steel door and sides, which had some rust, replaced the casters with good total lock ones, and cleaned everything else. It's not too hard to clean the grates & lower panel with the scraper and then soap / water. The only thing I would like improved is temp control. It is easy to get hot, but not as easy to keep the temp down. I have a extremely good smoker grill also which I use for ribs and other low temp cooking. I may need to replace the burners at some point, but in general for the price, I am satisfied.

On my second one. Only thing I don’t like about it is the frequent cleaning needed between cooks of the emitter grates

Overall, decent grill

It has pros and cons.
Pros: This grill is compact and reliable; small enough for a narrow space but big enough for four racks of back ribs. I have had it for three years and it is durable and solid. The fold down shelves on the side are handy. At most medium to high temperatures, it delivers nice reliable, even heat. Good heavy durable grill surface. Not prone to flare-ups at all. Can get very hot if you need it to be, though this can take quite a while. Well built, not prone to rusting or deterioration. Attractive housing.
Cons: Takes longer to heat up than any gas grill I have ever owned, presumably because of the large area between the burners and the heat shield. Extremely difficult to regulate temperature if you are trying to cook low-and-slow over indirect heat; over time the temperatures will "wander". Also the adjustment of the gas control have enough play in them that making fine adjustments can be very tricky. So if I am doing something for hours at low temperature, such as a brisket or tri-tip, I have to babysit the grill pretty much constantly or it will get too hot or too cool. Finally, fat tends to pool on the infrared shield while you cook, which means the burn-off produces tremendous amounts of smoke, which annoys the neighbours.
Overall I like the grill. The most annoying thing for me is the problems controlling temperature at lower heat settings. I also wish there weren't the tremendously smoky burn-offs after cooking even relatively low-fat items like fish.

I have had two infared grills from Char-Broil. This is the only grill I will own! I can take the temperature up to 550 degrees and cook a ribeye that will melt in your mouth. I can slow cook leg quarters and not burn them. The very best, in my honest opinion!

Didn't last 3 years. Everything that's not stainless steel rusted out even being kept under a cover. Grill literally fell apart when I went to move it. And guess what, those parts are only under warranty for 1 year. Back to weber
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Since I got my first THRU infrared grill from Charbroil about eight years ago. I replaced for this similar model because the system is excellent, only compliments I receive related to the flavor and perfect Medium-Rare beef. I hope Char broil will not discontinue this THRU infrared system.

Great for small balcony areas and SAFE

This grill fits great on our small apartment balcony and I feel safe using it, despite the high temps it reaches, as the barrier between the direct flame and grill rack eliminates scary grease fires. THAT BEING SAID, I've found it essential to remove the cooled grill racks and underlying barrier sheets, scrape them free of all food particles from previous grilling jobs (I simply scrape them with Scotch-Brite pads in kitchen sink; no water or scrubbing with soap & water needed) and then replacing before firing up again to cook on. It creates a bit more prep time before grilling but eliminates excessive smoke and odors and truly, not that big of a deal! I've also learned to gril quick-cook items like burgers and shrimp with the cover LIFTED, as the high heat will quickly cook a burger or steak to medium-well or well-done. We like our beef medium rare and regulating the heat by carefully timing cooking as well as keeping the lid off while the meat is on works well. ALSO: it's a good idea to turn off the burners completely during the last minute of grilling. The residual heat will finish the job.
