Very disappointed with the quality.

Very poor quality. Does not compact beyond a half inch. Very noisy. Fist American Home Warrenty provided the compactor as a replacement for my previous compactor.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

We would like to note that you will not see compacting of trash the first few times you load. The drawer must be at least 1/2 full of trash before you will see any amount of compacting. The ram does not travel all the way to the bottom. Trash in the bottom of the drawer will be crushed during later cycles.
Glass bottles can also make a loud noise when they break during compaction. Some bottles in the trash drawer will not always break during the first cycle. You may hear sound several cycles later.

The unit has been down more than it has run

We bought this unit in May and it was installed in November. Original unit never worked. Repairman sent out and was told unit was defective from factory. The plunger was stuck above the screws and had no way to be pulled back down. Was told there were no SS units in America and didn't know when any more would be in. I asked if there were any other colors available in the same model. So, I ordered the same model in black and swapped out the SS face. Great, it works...for about 2 weeks and starts doing the same thing our original unit was doing. Turns out the plunger has pushed above the screws again... something it shouldn't be doing. So now they are saying it can be repaired and we are waiting on parts...again. we are going 4 months into a brand new appliance and have only used it for a total of 2 weeks. I'm feeling pretty confident this will not be our last repair based on past experience. I hope I am wrong.

We had only a few choices

We remodeled using black stainless and had few choices so decided on a panel ready trash compactor. Though it works fine, we're disappointed that it lacks a hard pack feature and does not have a deodorizer, especially for the price. A hard pack feature is great when you need another day or put a lot of trash in at the same time. Perhaps these features are simply no longer available.

I believe that the page should be updated to accurately reflect the color. Since my appliances are all GE Profile Black Slate and no compactor come in Black Slate so I bought the black. it Is actually glossy black and does. It fit with the other appliances color.

We have had compactors in previous homes, but never a GE brand. Truly impressed with the quality of the GE. We love the cleanliness of trash compactors vs traditional trash cans.
