If you're a long time user of H&R Block Premium software and your tax situation doesn't change too drastically from year to year then you appreciate a consistent, quality product. This is the reason why I stick with H&R Block. I've tried Turbotax several times in the past and I didn't like the constant changing of the user interface. Looking for clear guidance/answers was not as clear using Turbotax. No software is perfect, especially in a area of tax preparation where tax laws change from year to year. Tax software like this is great for those who are organized (keeping all receipts / documents that may influence your tax return) and are comfortable doing their own tax returns. I greatly appreciate the final tax review / audit review at the end of the program. This is like getting a written essay back from your teacher with all the red marks indicating all your mistakes. Once you fix all of these mistakes then you can turn your essay back in for a high score.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Fast
Cons: Time consuming

I've been using this H&R Block software for nearly 20 years to do my taxes, and the software has always been great, but this year I ran into (what I consider) a major issue at the end of filing, an issue that I spent several hours trying to resolve, and in the end still got wrong.
As a small business owner, I have to pay quarterly taxes, and my wife and I fall into the "high income" calculation when it comes to estimated taxes and the "Safe Harbor" method, where instead of paying 100% of the previous years taxes to make sure we avoid a penalty, we must pay 110%. In previous year's iterations of this software, the "Plan" section gave options on which route I would like to pursue. This year's iteration did not, it just jumped into all of the "What do you anticipate for next year" questions. So I was not alerted to the 110% threshold. This forced me to have to go through and read several IRS publications to determine if this was still a thing or if I would be ok at the 100% for tax year 2025. Since the IRS changed the way the publication was written between last year and this year I ended up missing it. Thankfully I was alerted to where it was by a dear friend, but as a result, I had to make (2) first quarter payments to the IRS instead of one. In previous years, the H&R Block software did not explain why it calculated my estimated "Safe Harbor" at 110%, but at least it was there which pushed me to go read the IRS publications in search of the 110% vs. 100%.
Honestly, this really bummed me out to have to deal with this. It truly felt like H&R Block was using the plan section simply to sell more services this year, and not as a aide to actually plan for 2025 taxes.
Pros: Easy to prepare
Cons: Time consuming
