The first of two returns we tried to file was rejected by the IRS, but the reason given by HRB made no sense. We prepared the same return using Lacerte and it was accepted. We still don't know what went wrong with the HRB software. Hopefully the 2nd return we need to do will have a better result. We have been using it for 8 years, and it has always worked for return #2, but didn't work for return #1 the two times we tried it.
Pros: Easy to prepare

When I am presented with a verification item, there are no instructions as to what needs to be fixed. This year I had a number that was highlighted. No instructions as to what I needed to do with/about that number. No explanation at all. Frustrating.

Overall a decent program. Filed both my federal and state taxes electronically with ease.
The only thing I noticed this year, as opposed to other years is that I wasn't notified by email that my submission was either accepted or rejected. Other than that, a very comprehensive program that I have been trusting for many years.

Have been using H&R Block Software for a dozen years. It is easy to load, updates as needed and it is easy and intuitive to use. I especially like the "take me to" feature for further explanations and the tax code to find answers to all of those can I deduct/claim this.

I first bought Turbo Tax but balked when told I had a $74 penalty to the state which I knew met an exception, it didn't give me the opportunity to file the necessary form instead the program added it to the amount due. Then I tried H & R Block tax program, it noted the penalty but allowed me to let the state figure it out.
With the H & R Block program I did have trouble with the VA State deduction for income of dividends from Government Obligations, the program wanted it as a percentage of the total dividends on the 1099, this was difficult because it was a consolidated 1099 of several funds that had dividends from Government Obligations of different percentages, I calculated the $ amount for each fund then had to try to calculate what the percentage was of the total dividends declared in that 1099. By this time I am on the State return and had to keep going back to the Fed return to adjust the percentage so it came out right. A dollar number instead of a percentage would have been so simple.
