For many years I paid to get my taxes done. But I would go in and people would just put my numbers into software. I thought I COULD totally do that! So I've been doing my taxes using H&R products for years. I don't have complicated Taxes.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Fast

We have used HR Block software for many years. Taxes have changed with new standard hire standard deduction limits etc. but this software has not not It asks questions than made it longer than needed to complete this years taxes and many were confusing. It was hard to understand why we got so many warnings when the real numbers and truthful answers were provided. Some examples were for dependent children and for charitable deductions,
Pros: Easy to import documents
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to prepare
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Software works pretty well. I use for business (several rental properties). There are a few sections where if you answer the questions in a straightforward manner, you will create multiple entries for the same expense/income, so you have to double-check.
Pros: Easy to prepare
Cons: Time consuming

The software did what I wanted it to do. There are some misleading paths to switch between the questionnaire and the form. Software is designed to hold control too much refusing to allow someone to put simple figures in the form.
