I've used TurboTax for around 30 years to do my taxes, but this year decided to try the H&R Block program. To be honest, I've decided to go back to TurboTax next year for two reasons.
1. TurboTax is easier to use. H&R Block has all of the features, but they're harder to find and aren't integrated well enough to be intuitive. Just for example, I wasted a lot of time trying to figure out how to correct a mistake I made. (I can't remember the particular mistake, but I do recall being frustrated by the difficulty.)
2. The software doesn't offer as much guidance as TurboTax. TurboTax uses a well-thought-out series of questions that guide you through the process. These questions give you confidence that you've not overlooked an item (whether income that you're supposed to report, or a deduction to which you're entitled). This was largely missing in the H&R Block program. Just as an example, it was only after I filed my tax return that I realized that I'd forgotten to claim a deduction for the property taxes I paid on my house the previous year. However, by this time I was too frustrated with the software to file an amended return.
The oversight would not have happened had I used TurboTax, because TurboTax would have specifically asked if I'd paid property taxes last year.
