I really like the software, been using it for many years. I tried some of the more expensive options and they weren't better. I have the auto- renew and I like it, Every year around Nov. I get an email with a link to download my software and than every time that I use it I get a reminder to check for updates. It's great and it's reasonable.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast
I would recommend this to a friend!

I've been using H&R Block software for several years. Overall it is an easy way to file taxes, however, the ongoing conflict between federal and state software prevents me from being able to file state taxes electronically. Listed as the spouse on the return, my educator credits get attributed to the other person on my return when the software loads federal info over to the state program. This requires a manual override, which prevents e-file for state. This issue has been reported many times and is still not fixed. The accuracy review is helpful, but sometimes going to double-check an item on accuracy review is difficult. It does not step you through the form the same as it does when initially entering information, and toggling between that screen and the 'take me to' feature is not easy when you're a visual person who needs to see side-by-side to be sure it is the right item being looked at. The software does not allow for multiple windows to be open to do that comparison. Maybe make the accuracy review take the user to the step-by-step screen on the form? That would make this feature more user-friendly. Even with those TWO issues, of the tax software available, if you have itemized, business, or property owner information to claim on your taxes, this is the best of the programs I have tried.

Generally HRBlock does an adequate job. I use the Premium version because I have a fairly complex tax circumstance. Much of the information required to satisfy the IRS and my residence state is gathered by HRBLOCK, but not all. I am a non-practicing CPA and do taxes for my adult children and their families. For this purpose, it's fine, but their taxes are easy! The more complicated and multi-state situations I must figure out for myself are not, and often I must fill out IRS and state forms not available in this version, or any other that I know of. The real down side of HRBLOCK is its help screens. They are way to terse. Online help essentially does not exist. When I get the information I need from a Turbotax help site, I know there is a problem with HRBLOCK. So, if your taxes are straight forward, fine. If not, use something else or get a tax CPA to do them for you, and pay the price.
Paid for a software program to calculate everything and then I get to a section where you tell me I have to recalculate your calculations myself by hand and you reference publication 936 which is complicated and then I’m not told where to put my new calculation after I spend hours figuring it out. Now I have to go pay someone to do my taxes.
