The extra fee to electronically file state taxes is deceptive. Almost everyone has to file in at least one state, so not including that is underhanded. The option to file it non-electronically for free is stupid - since it is so much less convenient, you are basically inflicting pain on your customer to force them to pay extra. I expect that treatment from my cable company, but not from any decent business.
There are a few flaws in the software: when you correct a mistake and it adjusts your refund amount, it does not make the corresponding adjustment on the form that sends the refund to your checking account. Also when taking care of the excess HSA contributions, I had to manually pull up another form and manually copy the amount from one form to another - exactly the kind of thing I buy tax software for to avoid having to do.
Overall though still basically decent software. No worse than dealing with an accountant, and much cheaper.
I would recommend this to a friend!

This software is poorly designed and acknowledged bugs. It frustrates me every year and I will never buy this again.
Some mundane errors in error checking. Very expensive for in person chat or call for tax queries. Otherwise ok
Cons: Time consuming

Too much for too little

Block charges to download state software, charges to electronically file state returns, then won't file my returns?? Every return I did was 'randomly selected' forcing me to call in and answer bizarre invasive questions to prove who I was. Block, you are not God and you are not the IRS. Just provide the product/service I paid for and get over yourself.
I have used H&R Block Premium for years and have always found it easy to use. This year, however, I had a major problem with it that consumed most of a day. The problem with the software is that it does not allow the user, in all instances, to learn where figures generated by the program come from. I finally figured out the problem in my case after around 8 hours. If the program had told me where the figures came from, it would have taken a few minutes. I sought help by chat and on the phone from H&R Block and therefore am confident that this is a problem with the software.
