First year to Fail a Perfect Score

I have used H&R Block software for over 10 years to prepare my 1040 but also a 5227 and a 990 PF for other, considerably more complicated, reports. The failure this year is because they omitted to program for the exception to the rule in the case of Form 8962. For instance if a family member turns 65 during the year they leave the Marketplace and segue into Medicare. So far, so good. But two dependents who had to re-enroll on the Marketplace as individuals. The result was three different 1095-A forms to reconcile into the 8962. I have always loved the narrative in the past because of its user friendly interface. This time it failed because there seemed no way to conflate three 1095-A's to come up with totals that accurately sums for the columns required on the form. With all the other worksheets available in the software, it would not be a challenge to offer one for extraordinary scenarios like this one. Finishing the final return required much more time and research to produce using IRS online forms and instructions to complete. One other line was misdirected in the software, Line 14 on Schedule A did not warn of the exception to the IRS instruction to "Add lines 11 through 13" which would leave a 0 on that line unless digging into the instructions to research the real formula. I hope you do better next year. Feel free to contact me for more suggestions, GUI included!

Unacceptable that I had to call to get my return filed. They would not even let my wife verify when she got the email because I was primary taxpayer. Unacceptable and waster my time!
Pros: Easy to prepare
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to import documents
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I had a difficult time e-filing. First it said I needed to update the software, which I tried to numerous times. Then it said my access code was incorrect. I went through the steps , including credit card entering several times before it finally took what I had been entering all along and I got the confirmation. I'm hoping the state charge will be on my statement only once, so I don't have further frustration
Most of the questions are straight forward and they tell you where to look for a particular entry or dollar amount if you aren't sure. If you are self employed, you really need to be diligent about keeping records of expenses, a mileage book in your car, etc. Home office? You need to keep track of your utilities for the year and be able to calculate what percentage of your home in square feet is your actual office. Investment monies? It goes thru all that too from your 1099-DIV and 1099-R's, etc. Medical expenses can be a deduction too, so keep track of those throughout the year too. The H&R block software covers everything, so you don't need to be an accountant to understand how to do your taxes.
