Better than filling the .pdfs
on April 9, 2019
Posted by: JeremyMD
Compared to the personal version of TurboTax this feels like going back a decade. The federal e-file requires printing, ink signing and scanning a document. The state return which is expensive doesn't e-file at all.
But compared to downloading the fill in pdf forms and filling them in manually this saves time (probably 4 hours for the trust I administer) and likely avoids errors. So, I'll use it again next year.
What's great about it: Has the forms, does the math
What's not so great: Fussy e-file for federal, no e-file for state

Turbotax Review
on April 10, 2019
Posted by: jbflsal2
My 2nd year with Turbotax after multiple years with an EA who was wonderful but became less affordable as the number of my small business endeavors expanded. I am not a tax professional but a decent bookkeeper. I relied upon the step-by-step process. Year two was easier as familiarity increased. It was easier to drill down within the forms and sub forms and to get to/understand where specific numbers are being generated. At times Turbotax can be a bit hard to navigate and sometimes it hangs but by closing/rebooting/reopening it has always corrected itself. I believe using Turbotax has forced me to better understand this important aspect of my businesses. Hope this review helps.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Sometimes oversimplifies and leaves more complicated matters glossed over

eFiling Final checking
on April 10, 2019

I was very satisfied and found it easy to follow until started to eFile. Then kept asking for more info that I had already provided, it was confusing and I think it caused to enter data that I shouldn't have but had no choice. Otherwise - Great
What's great about it: Easy & Efficient
What's not so great: Last minute extra info seemed redundant and confusing.

Lacks Questions for Estate Taxes
on April 10, 2019
Posted by: Abundio
I received a 1009-R for the estate with tax withholding amounts. Going through the process it did not ask questions about withholding amounts nor di it ask questions concerning the other boxes on the 1099-R that had information. I had many Tax Consultants question the validity of the information I provided.
What's great about it: Easy to use understandable
What's not so great: Not enough questions to gather information on estate for fed or state (CA)

Helped with administering an estate
on April 12, 2019

Having never done a 1041 or NYS estate income tax return, TT made the daunting project doable in a relatively easy and fast way. Generally worked easily and clearly, although asked some questions about special situations that were not clear. Explanations didn't always help. Specific problems: (1) I wasn't doing K-1's because made no distributions during 2018, and marked option early that I would not be doing K-1's. Regardless, TT repeatedly went back to asking for Social Security numbers for K-1's. (2) First review said everything done, but when e-filing, TT kept coming back asking for more information. Should have handled these additional questions earlier.
What's great about it: Allowed me to file a 1041 and NYS returns for the first , and only, time
What's not so great: Not always clear, required some technical knowledge

Start Over

For me personally, the info pulled from quickbooks causes more problems than it helps. Much easier to reconcile by entering myself. I have no idea where it pulled some of the info from, and i could not find where it would tell you where the info came from. So I printed my Profit Loss and my Balance sheet and entered the info myself. They guide you. Saved a bunch of time.
What's great about it: Fairly easy to use
What's not so great: Transfer info from Quickbooks Not good
