TurboTax & Quickbooks Online
on March 5, 2019
Posted by: CoreyG69
first off... I love TurboTax and have been using Intuit & Quickbooks products for almost 20 years.
However, I don't understand why I have to buy a CD of TurboTax, then use the only computer in my house with a CD ROM drive (antiquated) to use the product. The User Experience itself seems like a throwback to 10yrs ago.
Why can't you design an online TurboTax that integrates the Quickbooks Online data? I spent a couple hours entering data, when that could have simply been imported from QBO.
What's great about it: Still the best Tax software in the marketplace
What's not so great: Feels antiquated given I have to use a CD, plus it won't import data from QBO

Just what we needed!

I can't give enough praise to this outstanding company. A small business person, like I am, needs a simple, quick guide, to help prepare the brain wrenching taxes. I feel confident that my taxes are filed properly. This product was well worth the money I spent.
What's great about it: easy to use
What's not so great: I had to print to see if I owed the IRS

Like-kind exchanges of real estate
on March 5, 2019
Posted by: 52Tumbleweed
We have a rental real estate LLC which engaged in a like-kind exchange (sold one rental property, bought a new more expensive one), and I encountered 2 problems:
1) timing: The software seems to contemplate that the entire exchange occurs in the same tax year, in our case a calendar year. But in fact we sold our old property in late 2017 and bought the new onevery early in Jan 2018. As a result I reported the exchange on my 2017 return. However, once I answered the question "yes" as to whether I acquired the property in a like-kind exchange on this year's return, there was no option to say this exchange had previously been reported. This led me into an hours-long frustrating software loop in trying to explain that the transaction had already been accounted for, tax-wise, that eventually made the software program stop working. I eventually deleted that whole return and started over, not reporting the like-kind exchange at all in 2018, even though that was when the new property was acquired. Therefore, I recommend that TurboTax create a separate like-kind exchange option for exchanges that cross over tax years. This would especially make since since it can take up to 180 days to close the deal under IRS regs. 2) Secondly, in determining the basis of the rental property for depreciation purposes, there is no option for an adjusted basis because of a like-kind exchange. The TT question is simply: How much did you pay for this property? But acccording to IRS pubs, that would not be the basis for depreciation in like-kind exchanges; the adjusted basis of the relinquished property would be that basis. So I recommend that the software be adjusted for that purpose. Other than these issues, I was very satisfied. But they did cost me hours, so I hope you can fix them going forward.
Thank you

Good, but not great
on March 6, 2019

For the most part, 2018 TurboTax has kept with their tradition of the tax walk through or forms that addresses the needs of a non-accountant to professional tax preparer.
However, this year there were significant changes with 199A regulations for Specified Service Trades or Businesses. TurboTax contained almost no clear explanations for decision making. No walk through to select the correct path and a bug that never selected the business type until the error checker at the end.
What's great about it: Why I like Turbo Tax, a good walk through of all issues
What's not so great: Nothing of value on significant tax changes

Overall, no complaints! Much cheaper than a CPA for simple returns.
What's great about it: Helps walk you through each step
What's not so great: Would benefit from more examples in the help sections
Pros: I bought or sold investments
