Bug in Program
on March 2, 2019
Posted by: GaryD44
I could not print Form 3522 for California from Turbotax. Turbotax wouldn't even generate it. I tried printing it, saving it as a pdf, but the program crashed and could not create the file. After attempting to do this and recovering three times, I feel lucky that I was able to complete my return. Unfortunately, I had to go to California's FTB website and download a blank Form 3522 and fill it out manually.
What's great about it: It mostly worked like it should
What's not so great: Could not print my Form 3522

Made it pretty easy for trust
on March 2, 2019

I use TurboTax for personal and for the trust I manage as the trustee for my niece and nephew. It seems to work fine. I only think the business and trusts are different - so it should be possible to have a simple product at a much lower fee than the same form that is used for huge trusts or businesses. These trusts make no money but are barely required to file.
What's great about it: This was fast to complete
What's not so great: Too expensive for small trust - would suggest smaller product for inheritance

It gets the job done, but takes some work.

It gets the job done, but at times takes some extra work on your part. I started with the Business return. On Form 8825, Rental Real Estate Income and Expense Worksheet, On Depreciation QuickZoom, none of the 3 buttons work. I was doing a California Partnership and it had a problem with my Partnership Name, but the instructions for fixing it did not work. More significantly, when I told it that I wanted to work on LLCs, it immediately took my partnership and made it into an LLC, which it is not. I have a partnership that is not an LLC, and separately I have 3 LLCs. This problem could not be fixed and I had to redo the tax return from start.
What's great about it: Most things worked as expected.
What's not so great: Too many errors and bugs

Business products are not good

Business Federal main issue is how inconvenient it is to print certain documents related to assets. It takes 6 or more clicks to print asset entry worksheet supports. Business State main issue is most of the information from the federal does not transfer over to the state. I literally had to know how to do my own state taxes as the software did not help at all. Half of the forms were left completely incomplete. And the "review" diagnostics is just a bunch of statement like "you need to review this to make sure it is okay". Umm, isn't that what I am paying for the software to do for me? software asks questions. I answer them fully. Software fills out forms for you.
What's great about it: The forms are there if you know what needs done
What's not so great: answering all of the questions doesn't fill out all of the forms
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Really Good Software
on March 3, 2019

Overall, a very good product. The interview process really helps, but needs refinement is certain areas. On the business side, there was little help with navigating the purchase of a new business vehicle and utilizing a trade-in to make it happen. Also, the CPA that helped me could not access my computer remotely to walk through the corrections.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Some areas need refinement

There was no previous data, however, have been using for 6 years. Went in to make changes on 1065 and all data was gone...had to start all over. too expensive for this waste of time.
What's great about it: flows clearly
What's not so great: no previous data

Bug in Turbotax

Turbotax does not calculate 'business income' from my K-1s and Sched E rental income when determining eligibility for Section 179 deduction. It thinks I have no business income and so puts by deduction limit to zero. Wrong.

Software Beyond Frustrating

This software was inadequate. I still had to do extensive research and read the IRS instructions in order to file my State and Federal S-Corp returns.
What's great about it: None
What's not so great: Software inadequate.
