TurboTax was easy to use and when I had problems, there was always a way to get in touch with a CPA for help.

Overated & Needs Improvement!
on April 13, 2020

30 years ago Turbo Tax was a major improvement to filing taxes yourself. Not anymore.
Year after year I just see the same program with zero improvements. The software asks the same questions, such as if I am in the farm industry or in the military. As if I decided to leave the city, buy a farm, and join the Navy at 43.
Some of the most time consuming processes are entering in my itemized deductions. I'd like to see improvements with that.
Of course if there are errors on forms, TurboTax still expects me to manually fix them. Didn't I buy TT to not fill out forms?

Good Federal Step-by-Step, Far Weaker State & City
on April 13, 2020

Step-by-Step is very thorough for Federal taxes. However, New York State throws us back too much to filling our own Forms, and New York City is still more Do-It-Yourself. I don't mind working on Forms--I always refer to them--but not having sufficient step-by-step or instructions can make the task daunting for anyone who is not an accountant.

TurboTax still has bugs
on April 13, 2020

TurboTax is a great program but I've noticed that there are still bugs in the software. For example, when you go to file you have a choice to efile or print the file for mailing. If you say to print the file, you end up going into an infinite loop. Other problems concern items with an asterisk which are not handled by the program. One has to know what to do or else you are likely to miss on a substantial deduction. I have encountered other problems but cannot be specific at this time.
Pros: I moved, I bought or sold investments

TTAX 2019

My tax was for a complex trust. No distributions were made. The VA tax program got hung up by no K-! in FED. Was a time consuming mess to get around.
Pros: I bought or sold investments
