One size does not fit all

TurboTax includes 1041 estate tax return filing in it's more expensive Business software. The software asks questions and gives instruction as if it were a business instead of asking questions and giving information that would make sense for an estate. I had absolutely no confidence that I was doing it correctly. Then at the very end it mentions " let us know if you are required to file any of these forms". How in God's green earth am I supposed to know if I am required to file any other forms? That's why I spent over $100 for this software that claims that I don't have to know anything about taxes because they will walk me through everything; bull feathers.

Issues with Form 8822-B - Change of Address

Since the address used on the 2018 return was different than what is entered on the 2019 return the software required me to fill out form 8822-B. At least two issues were noted with this. First, when going through the screens to fill out the form it would start over and loop through the same questions again and again until I got out of the loop by selecting a different section other than General Information. Second, this form was not available and the software kept me from e-filing even though the form itself MUST be mailed in and is not part of the forms sent with the e-file.

Not that simple

I used Turbo Tax Business to file a 1041 trust return. I only had one source document, a 1099-R. There wasn't the usual fields to enter straight from the boxes of the 1099-R into the same fields in turbo tax. Also, it didn't include my Ohio return. Expensive tool for not much help.

Does well on most issues

Found Turbo Tax fairly easy to use. I have not found that it generates any report for beneficiaries to go with their K1s, that tells them how much foreign dividend income to report, if they have foreign taxes.

Much simpler way to file a Trust return

Turbo Tax for Trust and Business simplifies completing a Federal 1041, but still requires some due diligence on the part of the filer. While the Personal versions walk you step by step through everything--leaving almost nothing to conjecture--portions of the Trust product require a bit more knowledge, especially for the state returns.
