Needs Improvement
on March 14, 2019

Importing my QB file inflated my salaries & wages with ***no explanation why***. I therefore (erroneously) added health benefits + company paid taxes to other lines. The only way I figured it out was to redo everything manually! Why am I paying for this software?!?
What's not so great: Importing my QuickBooks inflated my salaries & wages with no explanation why.

Could Have Done A Better Job
on March 15, 2019

Section 199A was obviously thrown in the mix late with no effort to provide guidance or support. It was like 'here is the form, fill it out'! Imported numbers can't be edited. Error codes throw for K-1, Line 17 boxes set up for 199A. Anyone who didn't attend training on 199A will be totally lost. TT really should have done a better job.
You should be able to add/dispose of Assets in the beginning of the prep to get your current year depreciation numbers for posting to QB. Then give the option to import the QB file. The depreciation shown when an asset is added is different than the depreciation on the current year report (the actual).
Credits like Fuel Tax Credit are not presented so I miss it every year and have to go back and literally search for the form. If its out-of-sight, out-of-mind, it will get forgotten.
Edits to the retained earnings side of the Balance Sheet are difficult to impossible to make. Even if the adjustments are made one place, they don't follow through to the other areas. The final numbers don't change.
Delaware 1100S for S-Corps has never been available via Turbo Tax. But even though the software states it is unavailable, it continues to ask me over and over of I want to buy the state product.
I was very disappointed and very frustrated this year to find the same errors I find in the software every year. And to find the same difficulties editing certain fields because information is obtained out of logical order. I am frustrated enough this year that I may consider trying another product next year. I have been using TT for years and years; I started during the Windows 3.1 era.
What's great about it: Import of previous year simple
What's not so great: 199A Poorly Done, Credits not presented well, Asset deprec not accurate

Hate filing by mail. This year turbo tax failed at that.
What's great about it: Usually a good program
What's not so great: Will not let me e file. Says I need to do an update. Then tells me I'm updated.

Program had same problem last year. Not required to include schedules. Had to type in tolal assets several times because Turbo Tax remove the number typed in.
What's great about it: figures split year tax rate
What's not so great: Removed Total Assets -had to reenter twice.

glitchy

The separation of "guided entry" from "check for errors" seems like needless drama. If the entry is guided, the result should be error-free.
While one can imagine cases where this is not so, filing a basic S-Corp return for a corporation that did no business should not result in errors when using guided entry. In my case, the errors occurred on the NY state return which was not correctly copied from the federal return.
When the errors were finally discovered, the error-checker highlighted a field that didn't permit entry. It was calculated from another field, but the error-checker didn't say which one. What is the program even for if it can't understand what fields it copies from what other fields? In this case, not even addition was involved, simply copying.
While correcting "errors" that should not be possible, it's easy to make more errors. For example, whether fields are 0 or blank can provoke errors. The program should substitute one for the other as needed without bothering me because this will never frustrate intent.
The program runs error checking needlessly late. In my case, the NYS errors weren't reported until I got to "Transmit return".
Finally, the "guided" stuff involves many screens that contain no information, just smarmy up-beat language about what we're preparing to do next. I'm sure this reassures some people, but when going through endless loops of guided entry to get past error checkers, it's annoying.
Even filling out this review form, I encountered needless validation doorslams on the "nickname" field. I don't even want a nickname. This seems to be a limitation of the programming style at Intuit.
I plan to try a different company next year, but probably they are all bad.
What's great about it: Everyone uses it, so the government must tolerate it
What's not so great: It is not well-tested software
