[Flips game board over] “Upside Down”

I couldn’t be more impressed with this set. I’ve built many difficult sets in my years of building, but The Upside Down really challenged me in a way no other set has. The minifigures, first off, are amazingly accurate to the Netflix show, especially the four boys. I couldn’t wait to get to Dustin, my favorite character in the show. The build was pretty straightforward, up until you put the two halves together, then some thinking is involved. I’d recommend having two people, one to hold the halves together while the other pushes the trees in. The detail inside and out is just incredible, and upon finishing the real world Byers’ house I thought it could easily have been a set on its own. Both sides are packed with items from the show like the bear trap, the hole in the wall, and Will’s drawings on his wall. My only complaint is something no one else has said: when you flip the model over, the house in the Upside Down is reversed of the real world one. This is not the case in the show. Maybe I’m just picky, this would be an easy modification if I needed to. The whole model is stable on a flat surface although I am cautious when flipping it over to show the family. The best thing to do is hold the model by both of the roofs and tilt it over by my experience. Oh, and Hopper’s K5 Blazer is just perfect and fits onto a rock so when you flip it stays on. And lastly, the whole build is filled with great stickers that make the whole set come to life with details like the D&D rulebook and the alphabet wall, plus Upside Down versions of them. Overall, a great set for and Stranger Things fan or LEGO fan looking for a new challenge. If you’ve been thinking about it, just get it and you won’t be disappointed. Good luck and keep building!

Great for any LEGO fan

I biufht this set the day it became available for VIP mwmbers (May 15th) as soon as my local LEGO store opened. I immediately went home to build this monster of a set (which comes in a surprisingly large box, despite the piece count). The main box contains a smaller white box containing some bags. This is similar to other UCS models we've seen in the past. The build took a fair amount of time, bur given that it is near 2300 pieces, that is a given. The set has 2 instruction manuals with a design similar to the "classified" folder we got teasing this set. Book 1 contains some pictures and information, as well as the builds for the minifigure plaque, Hopper's truck, and the normal version of the house. Book 2 has some more pictures and information and the build for the Upside-down version of the house. The overall presentation of the model is awesome and is immediately recognizable to any fan of the show. There are 2 sticker sheets which is kind of a bummer considering the price tag, but oh well. The details are fantastic and it is truly a great set. The minifigure selection is also good, however I wish Steve, Nancy, Jonathan and a non-disguised version of Eleven were included as well. Overall this is a must have for any Stranger Things fan and any LEGO fan in general.

Even if difficulties, still worth it.

I feel that a lot of it is quite difficult to build, this is certainly too difficult for most children to try to build. It has a long of pieces that need to be put in place and eventually locked down, and if you aren't careful you will knock it loose and need to put it back. The roof I have see a lot of people have issues with, It needs to be aligned properly and that is hard to do. As well as the slant on the roof, it is VERY difficult to get those put on just right, it will most always hang off just a tiny bit... And a lot of the studs just seem to be hard to get pieces onto, some of the plate pieces especially, like they don't want to go onto other studs...
Ignoring difficulties building, The overall look of the set is amazing, it captures both the upside down and the real world great.... It is amazing the amount of detail they put into adding so many little easter eggs into the build, the bear trap, Will the Wise's hat, the jaws poster, the drawings, ect... Even on the sticker sheets, the Upside Down sticker sheet has all the stickers put on their upside down to the numbers, which is a very nice touch...
My only real gripes are with the minifigures. Sure, I get it is easier to put the blonde wig on Eleven than to try and create a new mold that looks like a shaved head, but they could have tried... Also Hopper could have greatly been improved by creating a doubled molded hat/hair combo, his hair is pretty nice, but in this set he just has a hat and that doesn't fully capture the hopper look.

Turn that frown to the upside down

This is a great set that provided a fun build. I estimate I have around 16 hours into the build as I would do a couple hours a day working on it.
Stability:
It's been a long time since I worked with lego so I was a bit concerned with some of the reviews regarding stability and how I would do with it since it's been so long. I can't speak to the issues some other folks have had but I did not experience any problems with the build. I took my time and made sure that every piece was locked together tight. I think there were a couple of times I knocked something off, but it was my fault because I wasn't paying attention.
Build experience:
I truly enjoyed watching the set as a whole come together as I completed each step. Lego has come a long way since I was a kid and the quality/style of building materials is much more advanced than what I remember. The thought process and engineering involved in the creation of this set is mind boggling. I am extremely impressed with how the set was put together and how the pieces are utilized to lock everything in place in the final steps. I didn't find any of the build to be too monotonous as it sometimes can be when replicating parts of a build. I think it was because that even though the house was pretty much the same, there was enough difference in color and style that kept it interesting.
General notes:
Being a fan of the series, they did a great job with all of the items included in the set. The characters are spot on and all the little extras are great reminders of what happened in the first season. I also liked all the little tidbits of info that they put in the build book regarding the series. It also wasn't lost on me as to what bags the characters were located in. This would also be a good set to build with someone else as it could be split pretty evenly. My only negative comment about the set would be stickers. I hate trying to apply the stickers perfectly but even those have improved over time.
All in all, this was a fun set to build and I would recommend it. If you are purchasing it for someone younger or a beginner, they may need some assistance in making sure the pieces are locked together tightly so the final step isn't frustrating to them.

After 3 months of saving my money and 2 days of building, I finally had the set from one of my favorite TV shows. I LOVE the minifigs and the car, plus all the details in the houses. I wish the houses could’ve been a little big bigger to allow for more detail, but other than that it’s great! I’ve had it displayed for over 2 years and it’s stayed together better than I thought LEGO things could. Who knew LEGO bricks could hold so much weight upside down, lol. Awesome set!!!

Overall great set - good detail, build carefully

I see several reviews saying this set completely fell apart and they could never get it to stand on its own. I built the Mustang before this set and Stranger Things was my second LEGO set in almost 2 decades so it's not like I have a lot of experience. I finished the two houses and when I tried to clip them together, the roof partially collapsed on one side and a few other smaller parts came off. It was super frustrating and I put it down and walked away. Came back a day later to see where I hadn't lined it up correctly. I rebuilt and tried a second time with zero issue. I don't get these reviews saying they rebuilt 5 times and it didn't come close to working. I have had this built set sitting displayed for 8 months and it's very sturdy and sound. Super great detail and an engaging build overall. It is a little complex when you attach the two houses and then the trees so have patience and carefully follow the instructions. That complexity and need for caution when building is what makes this set so uniquely striking.
