Super Challenging Build
on April 2, 2020

I have built numerous Lego models and even have a couple of MOCs (my own creation) that have been creative and fun.
This was my first really advanced technic and it was super challenging, fun and rewarding. Recommend to anyone who wants to really test their building abilities.
I must admit that the Defender looks great but I must have done something wrong with the gear shaft. The rear wheels do not turn (front do) so while it looks great it doesn't really drive all that well. It's kind of like it's in park.
Any thoughts other than taking it all apart and starting over would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your review. If the back wheels aren't turning, then some rebuilding will be necessary. The first thing to check will be any gears and axles - make sure they've got enough room to turn. If that doesn't do the trick, then you will want to do some more significant rework, making sure that everything's lined up just right.
If you need a hand troubleshooting the build, you can always get in touch at LEGO.build/Service-BV.

First off I see a ton of reviews saying this is too hard, lol it’s a technic and it’s suppose to be harder. Also for those who are sad they can’t see the trans/ gears etc. well you can’t see them on your real car either. This set is nice it’s harder than the bugatti/Porsche etc. and finally a set that makes one think and use their mind. Hint make sure items work before moving on. If you mess up, oh well, that’s the beauty of legos they come together and come apart. Who ever builds a set just once! Nobody gets better if sets are easy. So Lego let’s make one even harder. Challenge my mind even more. It’s disturbing to me, (everyone has their rights to opinions), but it gets so old when I hate this set because I can’t see all the hard work inside. Umm yeah no kidding. Look at a real bugatti or Land Rover, umm do you see any of the gears pistons etc. no! Technic is suppose to be about the real thing. I guess since I work as a mechanic I’m different. I love how they do this. The one thing is if I do make a mistake it’s Lego and it comes apart. Real cars good chance you will ruin the motor or tranny. For what it’s worth Lego let make some even harder now, push the limits. Develop night mare sets like auto engineers develop cars for mechanics. I also see complaints that the gears make noise etc, umm yeah. These are not laser cut metal gears. There are no ball bearings. It’s plastic on plastic that doesn’t exactly rotate just perfect, come on. I do have one complaint for Lego, Stop using stickers for crying out load on your higher end flag ships.

Challenging but WORTH IT!

I received this set as a birthday gift. I try to space out my builds so i dont have builders remorse in 3 days. This is one of the most complicated builds I've had the pleasure of taking on and actually the first one I've ever reviewed. It's that impressive.

Interesting build

Really detailed set -- especially given the transfer case and complex gearbox. However, better/updated instructions to fix the known issues with the gearbox seem to be in line.
As one reviewed noted below, is it even possible for this to run smoothly in high gears? I'm not so sure -- Lego needs to address this. It's frustrating having to tear this thing down for the third time to check the u-joints yet again...

My Favorite Technic Vehicle To Date

Before I start my review. Some may ask why it takes me so long to build my kits. I love the build and take my time. Sometimes I limit myself to 1 bag a day so as not to finish too soon.
On with the Review. This was a fun build. When I was building I was never sure how the parts would make the completed piece. Which to me is great as it shows me excellent build techniques. It wasn't overly complex. Just a joy to build.
I've also built the Chiron which was fun build but I enjoyed this more.
Love the play features and the durability of the kit. Would recommend to anyone into Lego.

Nice build - but should do more - Needs a motor!

This was a fun build. It was challenging with all the gearing and one should always double check their work when there is so much complexity and interlocking (which makes it hard to go back to make repairs. I must say that for all the gearing and internal complexity, the Rover doesn't do much after it is completed. The most fun are the doors (side and back), the steering, the hood and the winch, THIS MODEL BEGS FOR A MOTOR. It would be so much fun if one could see all this gearing in action. LEGO should seriously consider a motor retrofit kit for this. I have recently built several Technics kits with motors and they are much more fun. Another point, it seems that a lot of builders have had trouble with the transmission (I needed to do some repairs...) so I think it would be helpful in the instructions to have some "in process tests" to make sure that things are working correctly before you proceed to much further.

I absolutely love this set! incredible details, and a great build experience, the only issue I have found with it is that the transmission tends to "click" and doesn't want to engage the engine or roll sometimes almost having a springback effect. other than that though an excellent experience! would definitely recommend.
