Transmission is a bit dissapointing
on September 19, 2020

It is a significant challenge to build right. 11 years age rating is a joke, if 11 year old has patience and attention to finish it, such that it even functions in the end, he or she surely must succeed later in their life.
There's a lot of gears that are very easy to get wrong + one typo in the older version of the instruction (google it). As a model it looks cool and very well detailed, but to me the transmission was a massive let down. It's very complex, taking 2/3 of car interior, having half a hundred gears (maybe more) and dozen axles, but in the end they do almost nothing. The engine pistons are moving slightly slower or faster, which is really hard to notice and that's the only effect it has. What's worse, because of so many gears the inertia of motion propagation is very significant, the car has to roll for a 2-3 feet before engine reacts, and then if you reverse it's 2-3 feet again before it moves. It kind of breaks the illusion. I honestly think LEGO overdid this part a bit, there's only so much complexity you can cram in with plastic gears and still have them to work well.
Anyway, I actually had lots of fun building it and it looks great once finished. Probably is fun to play with too, but I'm a bit too old for that :(

Good but perhaps too overdone

First, it’s way bigger than the pictures suggest so make sure you have room to display it. I don’t like that the engine has pop up pistons, with this much detail they may as well have done a real engine. It also needs instructions to motorize it. Just spinning the wheels you don’t get to really figure out how the gearboxes work. But overall it’s pretty awesome and I would get it again.

Incredible Set!
on March 9, 2021

This is my first big Technic set and it blew me away! I have enjoyed Lego City sets since i was little, but this is a whole new level of fun!
I love dealing with small parts and mechanics, so the build wasn't bad at all, the instructions where clear and concise, and I paced myself so that I enjoyed every bit of it.
The suspension, the gearing, and the low-profile yet powerful winch are all outstanding, not to mention how realistic the headlights, color-scheme, and shape are to the real deal.

Good value, disappointing transmission
on October 26, 2019

Overall it was a fun build. It looks nice on shelf. After completing, the transmission had a clicking sound and shortly thereafter the long angled axles came off. I can’t get my fingers in to reattach so shifting and gears are unusable. Taking it apart to fix is not an option considering how much would have to come apart. I assume there is a mistake somewhere along the line but I am very disappointed.

Thanks for your review. I'm sorry to hear that you've experienced some frustration with the Land Rover Defender. We always test and retest our toys to make sure that they’ll hold up to play when they’re built exactly as shown in the instructions. If shifting gear features seem to gum up a bit, the best thing to do is double-check your build. For this specific set, this special function requires the gears to be adjusted just right to work. We know it can be a bit frustrating to have to rebuild again, but usually a gear a little off from where it should be can cause issues with the gear shift.

If you'd like a hand troubleshooting the build, or if you find that any pieces aren't holding together as they should, feel free to give us a shout at LEGO.com/Service.

Could be great but falls short
on April 2, 2021

Like many modern LEGO technic sets, the Land Rover is a very faith rendition of the original and a mechanical marvel with a beautifully designed suspension, steering and especially the 4x4 transmission. It's fun to build it up seeing it all come together, but disappointing to see it all become more or less inaccessible once the model is completed. All that intricate gearing that's brought into the cockpit is lost once you've put on the doors and roof. Hi and Lo Range? Gear select? You can't really use them. The only control that's externally accessible is the steering which is routed through to the roof. It almost feels like putting in all that fancy transmission was pointless if you can't easily play with it. I compare this model with the rough terrain crane that I recently built which has lots of functions, ALL of which are easy accessible for play.
That brings me to my second major issue with the model -- lack of motor control. The land rover would have made a fantastic app-controlled toy. It would have been so much cooler if you could drive it and change gears under motor control. I've seen some AFOLs on youtube who have pulled off a motorized conversion of this model, but I think it should have been motorized from the get-go (or at least have an option for motorizing it).
So overall I was disappointed. This model could (and should) have been great, but it falls short.

Missing bags
on June 22, 2021
Posted by: InventivePsyclone014
I purchased this set from a store, the box wasn't in good shape and the box was all taped up. I still bought it, and after opening the box, one of the bags were open and all of the bags for parts two and three were missing. I cant say I was surprised though, I knew something had to be wrong with it. If I ever get the chance to get another one, I will come back and write a new review. Note: I didn't pay full price, due to its condition it was marked down.

Poor Functionality
on January 6, 2022
Posted by: LovableArms052
There were missing parts that I managed to substitute in as I went along. They weren't major components to the set. I rebuilt the transmission and engine area twice to get the wheels to turn. The wheels never turned and it just made a clicking noise. I watched videos and read on responses others had with this same issue to no avail.

Waste of purchase
on April 1, 2020

1. This set remains useless as rear wheels don't move at all. I have rebuilt this set now twice, out of concern for incorrectly placed differential, or other cogwheels, to no avail.
2. Instruction manual is not user friendly, driven by poor highlighting of brick placement (particularly relevant when small ones are to be added in an already crowded area). In other Lego sets - e.g. Creator Expert - manuals show a frame around the piece and that could have been easily done here.
