I Love Gratuitous Complexity
on February 26, 2020
Posted by: StuR
My first Technic project and I'm hooked. This requires a strong level of focus. If you find yourself drifting, stop! Every step counts and you may get so far that an error is hard to undo.
The gearbox is insanely complex and I'm not sure to what end, other than the immense satisfaction I experienced when I put the wheels on and everything worked silky smooth, with no cracking or apparent friction.
Every little detail is pleasurable - the operation of the steering wheel via the roof's steering extension; the working "spring lock" simulator of the rear door; the expanding roof ladder; the moving cylinders of the engine.
No sense of repetition or boring phases. The challenge of getting it right, and the dangers of getting it wrong, all led to a thoroughly engaging building experience.
Well worth the cost.
See attached picture of my Land Rover in front of Old Trafford Stadium (!!!).

Missing Parts
on April 18, 2022
Posted by: Legobuilder
The build was difficult enough and I enjoyed the challenge but the overall build experience was horrible. Mid-build I realized the set was missing pieces. So I went online and ordered the part. I had to stop my build and wait almost 2 weeks for the part to continue. Once I got to the end I realized again I was missing another 3 pieces. It was frustrating because that meant I needed to wait another 2 weeks for the replacement part to arrive. Suffice to say my build experience was very poor. I build many lego sets and this was by far the worst. For the price of the set I would have expected more accuracy in having a complete set.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

While missing parts are rare, we understand it's disappointing when it happens. This isn't the experience we want for any of our fans and are sorry this happened with your set.

Good build and okay to play. nice suspension.challenging too. TO LEGO: mine has a cracking noise in higher gears. when I help the gears turn it doesnt crack though. could it just be tension or did I do something wrong?

It's important to leave a little bit of room between gears so they can move freely. We'd suggest having another look at the way you built your gears and make sure they're not pushed up too tightly against each other.
If you'd like a hand troubleshooting the build, feel free to give us a shout at LEGO.build/Service-BV.

I received this as a gift, and being a technician for Land Rover I was overjoyed to see how it “stacked” up to the real thing. Having never really built Technic I found this to be challenging but very fun and couldn’t stop turning the pages to see what was coming next. As most others are saying the gearbox is tricky and complex, and much like real transmissions, attention must be given to all steps to avoid miss placing gears. I ended up rebuilding mine 3 times and still believe I made a few mistakes. The attention to detail with the gear selector, hi/lo range selector and forward/reverse was another high point for me and watching everything sync up with the transmission down to the driveline and up to the engine was pure joy. One problem I encountered was the winch, I have big hands and once the winch is installed I cannot retie the string where it sits just behind the bumper without having to dissemble just about everything on the front end. (So make sure it’s tight!) Overall I thoroughly enjoyed building this and have found myself wanting more technic sets. Coming from working on Rovers, this was a nice break from the fixing and rebuilding part of my everyday life. For my own sake, I’m really hoping Land Rover takes a “piece” from the Lego assembly line and the Defender comes out with minor problems!

I’m going to help LEGO out there is two pictures in the instructions manual that are off and the gears and wheel need to be tested as you go. You will be upset if you don’t test the wheels and gears. It’s missing one piece that is not too bad you have to have patience if you going to build this ..overall love the look, great display piece

An 'Off-road' Adventure

This is my first review writing on a product and also my very first Technic I have build. I must say this was quite enjoyable build to relax the tension I am having especially due to pandemic the world is facing at the moment. However, I do want to stress the fact I had one snag when building this truck. I didn't had one packet that was numbered "4". It turns out I didn't lost one, but rather got the double of another one that was marked numbered "4'. That explains why I have so many extra pieces in the end. Nevertheless, I did contact Customer Service and I am very grateful they helped me out twice to get the right pieces.
As for the build, well like I said before, was incredible. The only issue I am upset, is that I can't operate the "winch". Seems like I jammed a couple pieces somewhere and most probably I have to break it apart to see the problem. I didn't care about all the switches or the inability to motorize the toy. I was excited to build from scratch and not losing a ton of pieces in the process. However, I do wish the instructions can be a bit clearer. I'm not sure is it just Lego or is it a Lego Technic thing, but I did noticed when building a Creator Mustang Set, there is a red circle visible on the pieces showing where to place on the build. That feature was very useful and made the build much quicker. On the Technic, it seems it bit harder because some pieces blend in with the page number and made it extremely difficult. Again, this is just my opinion and observations.
Overall, I did enjoy building this. It not only thrilled just me but also my family by surprising them my patience and dedication to pull this off. I had so many problems to face but were fun to tackle. The only issue I stressed was the packet problem. Other than that, I am very satisfied and thrilled I build a truck (probably my first and last) and hopefully Lego can have Jeep version of this. It has the right build and structure and probably might be even better than this the Defender.
[Sorry, for the long review, hopefully I won't get in trouble for this. :)]

After building the Bugatti and other Technic sets, for whatever biased reason, I assumed this Rover wouldn't be a very fun experience. Fortunately, I was wrong and it's actually turned out to be really great! The transfer case, third diff, new clutch gear, and stacked design of the transmission are great highlights. The body is also great, making the Rover much closer to a polished Creator Expert set than most large Technic sets. My gripes continue to be the use of ugly blue connectors.. why oh why can't black axle/pin connectors be created? Color-coordinated or body-matched inserts would be super! I'm also not a fan of the "Nano-Engine" but at this price point, can't complain too much about it. In all, I highly recommend this set. It's fun, and a great learning experience for kids and adults alike!

Good Gift for DAD's!

Usually I will just buy sets for myself, but recently it was my dad's birthday, and I wanted to get him a good set, filled with challenges. Of course, he finished it in a somewhat quick time and had no trouble with the stickers or any gears. I highly recommend this set to any Lego builder, expert or not, because of the opportunity to see a car come into LEGO form. Land Rover is a good company, and I am glad LEGO chose to agree with them to create yet another amazing car. NEVER STOP BUILDING (You will always get better!)
