Great except rear suspension

This is a VERY challenging build. Having built the Technic super cars, I was concerned this “small” set would be too easy: that is definitely not the case, as this one kept me busy and focused for many fun hours. The only disappointment - and it’s kind of a big one - is the rear suspension, as it won’t hold up the weight of the rear of the car (result is pretty visible and ugly sagging). I put a few pins in the wheel wells to help support the rear, but of course with those in place, the rear wheels won’t spin. Other than that, however, everything else is great.
I would recommend this to a friend!

We had feedback from other fans and there's a couple of building steps to check for this issue. Making sure the parts are in the correct location/orientation, check out steps 104 and 106 that use only red absorbers, and steps 152-156 that use both red and grey absorbers. Outstanding

This has to be the best technic set produced. Enough parts to keep you occupied for many hours. Careful attention to instructions is a prerequisite, especially gears and play in them. The many working features are a pleasure and they all work flawlessly. Was very impressed with the designers approach to connections. My finished model performed perfectly and no "clacking" occured at all, importance of proper gear assembly. Some have said the rear suspension sat low. Just make sure the brown pin goes thru the lowest "cross" hole nearest the wheel. The exterior is smooth, clean and stud free. Door and rear tailgate hinging are genius. The color is also very refreshing. Great job Lego team. Sometimes the instructions were iffy due to the complexity of the build and takes some concentration to locate installation points.

Mysterious Gearbox Issue

First of all, I wanted to talk about the good. It looks fantastic. The suspension is absolutely amazing for a set of this size, you can drop it from around 5 inches off the ground and not a scratch. However, mine only works backwards. When I roll it forwards it makes this awful cracking sound, but backwards it is buttery smooth. I have already re-built it, but to no avail. Never had this happen with a technic before, not even the Chiron. Lego please help I cannot fix whatever is wrong here.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Takes time but it is worth it

If you get this set, be ready for a long build. This for me was my toughest one, and it was also the most expensive Lego set I owned so far (never got any of the large SW sets).
It puts everything into detail and shows off the Defender 90 well, and you can also see how the transfer case and the transmission work. Even I was surprised how they got the doors to work.
As of 2023 this set is now retired from sale. If you are lucky to find one for the right price it is worth it.

Fun project — with caveats.

This was my first Lego Technic, and it was far more challenging than traditional Legos. Took about 23 hours to complete. It has moving gears and parts, but unfortunately, the most important drivetrain/steering system simply does not work. I spent a significant amount of time studying/troubleshooting that system during the build and believe I followed the instructions to the letter. This was disappointing.
There were also six missing parts. Fortunately — and amazingly — none of the missing pieces were critical-path items, and I can add them when they arrive from Denmark. This is my fourth project build, and all four had missing pieces (and the other ones WERE critical-path items that halted those projects).
Notwithstanding those caveats, this was a fun project.
