Tons of Features

Returned my Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt for the Garmin Edge 830 and have been mostly happy with that decision. However, Garmin live track has been very disappointing. Serious connectivity issues. Had a crash recently and the accident detection failed to alert my wife. Once again, “tons of features” just wish they worked seamlessly. I’m just not able to fully rely on the device.

Great device excellent battery power!

Really like the features eventhough navigation is still not great. Also not sure why the 830 has the same screen size as the 530? Finally great battery life and the unit does not turn on anymore when connecting it to power.

Bluetooth connectivity still horrid

Garmin devices keep on getting incrementally better but Bluetooth continues to be a daily struggle at least with a iPhone. Put the unreliability off live track on top of that my Garmin continues to be the most unreliable device I have by far.

* Don't underestimate the utility of the touch screen (good response time) - I've read buttons are better and cheaper, but I disagree if you like to 'explore', manipulating the map is a must and touch screen makes this so much easier.
* Integration of Strava and Trailforks is huge improvement
* Suggest to Garmin: allow custom screen settings for each activity - my example is using in spin class I need to set the backlight to stay on, but always forget to change it back to 15 secs, so setting it to stay on only for indoor cycling would be useful
* I also appreciate the integration with wearables (e.g. Fenix 5s)
* keep it up Garmin!

Huge step up from Wahoo

I’m impressed with my Garmin 830. I especially love the Varia radar taillight. It makes me feel infinitely safer and I feel naked without it now. The display and touchscreen are fantastic. I like that I can control my Varia headlight while riding, changing from flashing to solid at dusk. The only issue I have had is that if I have to detour it seems to take it a while to finally start navigating again and stop just telling me to take U-turns. It would be nice to have a way to quickly tell it to skip a waypoint so it would recalculate quicker.

Overall I'm happy I chose the 810 but the software has some bugs. It froze on me on multiple occasions right before the ride. I hope they figure it out whatever is causing that.
