Garmin stepped up with this

I have the Edge 830 about 2 weeks and love it! So many features above my 520 which crapped after 7 reliable years. Was hesitant to spend the $$ but definitely worth it. Awesome on the trail gives notice of upcoming trails and crossings. So far it’s great!

Edge 830 on Brompton

The Edge 830 was a gift for my 71th birthday and I us it on my Brompton. I have speed and cadence sensors as well. This system is working great! I have used it for about a month. I was concerned about using the speed sensor with the Brompton’s 16” wheels but there is no problem. The GPS is easy to use and Garmin Connect on my iPhone works well. I have recording all my rides.

Absolutely Necessary for Road Biking
on March 9, 2023

My wife bought one that she uses for navigation on our tandem. I then bought one for all the other features (speed, direction, etc.). I paired it with the axle speed sensor and the Varia radar unit. The ability to get audible and visual indications of approaching vehicles is a key feature for riding on roads. Love the touch screen; it's just like using an iPhone.
Perfect size. I tried the Edge 530 which is equally small. The setup was a little cumbersome. The touch interface on the 830 made the difference. The setup was relatively easy. That said I think I prefer using a phone app to make the setup as Wahoo does. I'm keeping the 830 and waiting for the 840

NOT for people lacking high speed internet
on March 21, 2023

Regardless of how many times I contacted Garmin Support for ideas, I could not get across the I lacked internet speed/capacity to do the initial update download. Of course I discovered the unit lacked any non-internet/wireless method of getting data. It lacked a basic sd card slot. I use my previous Garmins (705 and still 810) as an odometer for each of my bikes. This "new", not-so improved 830 (from my point of view) lacked this important feature. Basically after all was said and done, I returned it for a full refund. A waste of my time.

Arthur thank you for posting a review we appreciate the feedback. The device can be updated using the Garmin Connect app on your phone for device software updates for example, however for mapping updates that would have to be done through a connection to a computer due to the size of the mapping files. Sorry about the issues that you had and that you returned the device to the retailer. If you need any assistance in the future, please reach out to our team and we will be happy to assist you.

I chose the Garmin Edge because I already was using the Garmin ecosystem with couple of other devices, and it's been working well for me. It's a great navigational tool which has given me the confidence to go on longer solo rides.
ClimbPro has also been a standout feature which I didn't expect to love so much, the touchscreen is great in dry weather and easy to lock if it starts to rain, and I don't use an HR strap but I have the option to broadcast my HR from my Fenix watch which is nice. The downsides of the Edge 830 for me are the frequency of software updates, and the charging port being a micro USB rather than a USB-C, but overall I'm very happy with the device and use it during every ride.
