Plenty of Awesome Features!

If you like data, the 830 is for you! My only regret is not getting the 530 instead because when this screen gets wet, it's freezes up and won't respond to your touches anymore.

Great new features

The new maps are great. I also like being able to add other apps such as Trailforks and ridewithgps to the garmin device. I wish the tracking was more consistent and reliable. It seems to drop frequently. Otherwise it’s an improvement from the 820.

Edge 830 Turn-by-Turn Trail Guidance is Rubbish
on October 18, 2019

The "turn by turn" trail directions when mountain biking simply do NOT work as advertised. I was taken in by slick videos showing how the "turn by turn" trail navigation was supposed to work, which was very appealing. However, it does not work well at all, even on well mapped trails that have no issues with GPS signal. In fact, your odds of reaching your intended destination would be improved by doing the opposite of what the Edge 830 suggests. That's frustrating, as that functionality was my chief selling point for upgrading to this model. I hoped it would improve with software updates, but after 6 months, that functionality is still rubbish. Everything else works great and battery life is tremendously improved over the Edge 810.

Pleasantly surprised!

Purchased the 830 a few months ago but just recently set it up and started using it. My main reason was increased battery life, I was tired of running low on long road rides. The 830 has met those needs easily, centuries are no longer a worry, even using Garmin radar, heart rate and power meter. The additional features have been the pleasant surprise. Grit & Flow on MTB rides along with “airtime” are fun additions, bike alarm and easily customizable screens are very nice. The software has worked flawlessly (which has not always been the case with previous Garmin products) and pairing the device to my phone and other devices was simple. The touchscreen has been improved greatly and overall I would highly recommend this product!

Nice features but problems with hard rain.

I bought this when my Garmin Edge 800 lost its on/off button cover. At first the adjustment to the new operating methods took a bit getting used to, but now they are pretty much intuitive. The main issues I’ve had with it relate to weather. First, if you are in a very wet ride, the elevation data gets totally out of whack, which I think is due to water getting in the barometric pressure port? From other reviews of Garmin bike computers, apparently the 1030 does not have this problem, so I have to wonder what Garmin did differently on the newer 830 to create the problem. Second is that in cold weather it is a bit difficult to operate the touch controls through gloves. It can be done, but you have to work at it. Otherwise, day to day, it meets my needs for a screen big enough to read and data options that meet my needs.

Picked this up prior to a 4 day point to point bike trip for the purpose of a navigational aid. It mostly did the job. A few items of note. First, keep it in battery save mode if you plan on riding all day. Downloading tracks is doable but not straightforward. If you are off your track the screen stays on continuously. Broad overviews are not very useful on the small screen. This bit us once when we went off route and the unit tried navigating us back to the track as it had us go in a massive circle. You have to hit the physical "start" button each time you ride if you want route guidance or the computer to track your ride. For me, it is easy to forget to do this. While riding there are some goofy, useless stats on the screen that I could do without. Grit being one of them. Who cares? Be nice if time, distance, speed were all displayed instead. The jump meter is a bit goofy too. Apparently every jump I make is "great". I've also done some huge step downs and it not record them as jumps due to smooth landings I assume. Garmin Connect is a little clunky too in that the phone has to be right next to the Edge for it to receive ride data. The main reason I got this was to have a computer with some mapping capability. It mostly works but I'd suggest Gaia or some other phone GPS app as a companion if you're in the backcountry with this unit. Be nice if it liked to Earthmate like to InReach does to allow for broad overviews when needed. Overall good. Just not perfect.
