Improved battery life & features, but . . .

I upgraded from the 820 to the 830. The feature set for the 830 is much improved for training. The battery life is a lot better. My only nit to pick is with power meter “calibration.” Why does it require so many more steps for non-Garmin power meters than for Garmin Vectors? Make it quick and easy!

Wonderful features on this unit. The touch screen is wonderful and the ease of operation make it Simple and fast . I do a lot of bike packing so I really enjoy the sleep feature on this model as well as putting in consecutive long days without having to charge it .

I have been using the Garmin Edge 830 for a few months now. I use it 2 times per day on my morning commute and my afternoon ride. So far the device has been absolutely flawless. It is super simple to use and customize. Syncs extremely quickly. Uploads my rides to Strava quickly. I don’t use Nav too often, but the couple of times that I have it has worked perfectly. I am happy I went with the touch screen and have not had a single complaint about the screen. I crashed about a month ago and scratched the screen pretty bad, but that did not impact the function of the unit. I requested support to fix the screen and Rick at Garmin was excellent to work with. Replaced the unit for a very reasonable price.
Bottom line, I would recommend this to a relative or even a friend ;)

i am very happy with the features that the Edge 830 has to offer. I would raise rating to 5 stars if it is capable to record my heart rate data on my Apple Watch. Or connect to MapMyRun. Hopefully, Garmin can add the Apple Watch heart rate feature by next firmware update.

Great upgrade, still plenty of bugs

I've had a 510, an 820, and now an 830. The 830 is a great upgrade over even the 820 -- it's much faster with a great touch-screen and the graphics are much sharper.
Thing is, the Garmin website still stinks. There are small annoying bugs that the company just hasn't fixed yet. It's hard to connect to WiFi, and sometimes uploads don't work.

Single greatest issues I have experienced and continue to experience with all Garmin products I own is the connection interface with my smart phone.

I absolutely love this device particularly when coupled to the radar function to alarm approaching vehicles. Touch screen works fantastically. Haven’t invested in the front light or heart rate monitor but planning on it. Buy it.

A welcome evolution of the 820

After owning numerous 820s that failed in a variety of ways (battery decline, trouble connecting with satellites around the country, extremely slow map acclimation after making turns, etc.), I was upgraded to an 830. The processor is faster, the battery life longer, and the new features are innovative and useful. (For instance, even when riding spontaneously, without a programmed course, the device warns me of sharp turns.)
I treasure the 830 so far. The device has been a reliable, smart, crisp companion over a dozen or more centuries these last few months.
The only issue thus far (and this happens not infrequently) is that under even moderate cloud cover or even under trees, the satellite connection is interrupted enough for the device to pause for several seconds. It may even be a bright, sunny day, but one travels beneath a bare canopy of trees in a wide open area, and suddenly the device thinks I'm going 2mph and autopauses. That's frustrating. Just yesterday it was lovely and sunny, and the 830 paused half a dozen times over a 6-hour ride. Those pauses required me to travel an entire extra mile to record the same distance as I've traveled on an identical route literally a hundred times the last year. I lost an entire mile of recorded distance because of those pauses. Is it possible that wind conditions and atmospheric anomalies can account for this? Certainly. The device doesn't usually become comatose for an accrued mile of loss. But it does still pause often enough under (again) moderate cloud or tree cover to wonder how weak this satellite sensor is....
(Just fyi, my 830 doesn't have a silicon cover obstructing anything, which Garmin agents had suggested as a possible culprit for similar problems with the 820.)
Overall, I do love the 830 and am happy with it. The small glitches outlined above are a minor annoyance....
