Nice features but very painful to upload rides

I like the Edge 530 in terms of features etc. while riding but have found its connectivity with iphone to be very frustrating and difficult to use to upload rides to iphone. Will probably choose a different device next time.

Elevation grade is not accurate.

Grade % is not accurate at all. It started out ok but recently became very inaccurate. This is my second unit with the same issue. I believe it’s software related and the techs are working on it. I hope they fix it... Also the strava beacon doesn’t always work.

Great battery life, meh performance
on October 11, 2019

While the battery life of the unit is great, the buttons are finicky and the software is SOP for recent garmin units. The unit appears unable to accurately record elevation changes even after multiple firmware “upgrades” that often break more than they fix. If you have an old garmin and only want better battery life, or or getting rid of an even worse touchscreen (820), and expect the same lackluster performance as your current unit, then buy yourself a 530!

Decent hardware, Questionable software
on October 11, 2019

The 530 is a good piece of hardware, the biggest complaints are that the buttons are hard to press while riding and feel like they're made of questionable quality. This results in the unit pivoting in the mount or getting an unexpected result from an attempted click. The Software is confusing. Understand this is my first Garmin unit, I switched from a Wahoo Bolt, which is by far easier to setup and find your way around the unit. I also appreciate the ability to zoom in and out of a page where I have to build extra pages on the Garmin. Wahoo execution of their app to help setup and get navigation is awesome. Garmin makes you work feel like a work around in order to do the same thing along with a slow sync process. Finding maps on the unit doesn't match their website for creating and managing routs and the 530 can hold a surprisingly small number of routes. Not to mention Garmin still hasn't gotten the 530 firmware very stable. I still get get dropped sensors, freezes, and/or inconstant gps totals in about 1 out of 5 rides.
All that said, the screen is gorgeous, the battery life is excellent, and its the best Garmin has to offer in a sans touchscreen device (which I don't want). Hopefully Garmin gets their act together as the competitors are gaining at an accelerated pace. I find it unlikely I'll purchase another Garmin.

Everything I wanted and some more.

I purchased this about a month ago and have used it on all my rides. Quite a few rides since I was training for the BDB 100. I had one hiccup on the first ride when the unit locked up for no apparent reason. Since then, the unit has operated flawlessly. I purchased the 530 over the 830 because I have not had much success with touch screen devices especially when you are sweating profusely. I'm a data guy and love being able to view multiple fields on my rides. Time, speed, cadence, HR, %grade, and distance all on one easy to read screen. I love how the screen automatically adjusts for different light conditions. This is especially useful when one starts to ride before daylight. For the BDB 100, I was able to load the course and use the navigation tools. I continue to explore more and more with it and now that the weather is turning cooler, I look forward to using it while MTB.

Still getting used to it

I am still staying to understand the climb page as we do a lot of climbing. We like to know how much further to go, etc. also not sure what the colors mean ie. yellow, burgundy etc within the climbs and %grade as well. Sometimes we know it will be like 10% grade and device will say something crazy like only %4, and vs versa. Also regarding turns, it waits way to late to show Screen with “next turn”, especially when your in traffic and would need to switch lanes across traffic in order to make it.

Edge 530 Review
on October 11, 2019

All in all I absolutely love the edge 530. I love the bigger screen, I love the larger buttons, and I love the Maps. Navigation through all the menus is still easy . Switching screens while riding is easy. Viewing of all the statistics while you're riding is easy. It's a great product, except for one thing: the reaction time of the change in grade (percent grade) is still slow compared to the edge 500. I had an edge 520 for about a year and the reaction time was so poor on this device it was unusable. I use it extensively for training. It has greatly improved from the 520 but oddly still not as fast as the 500.
