It tells you when to change. It is easy to change. The instructions come with every filter change. You change using your hands (no tools). It takes longer to empty under the sink and get to my filters than it does to actually change the filters. I save my box and date it with "last changed date".

I live on the Great Lake and have good tasting water. The filter gives me that extra peace of mind knowing that you can't taste every problem. It also protects against minerals picked up in the municipal transmission lines and ther 80 yeard old pipes in my house. You can see what they collect when you change the filters.
