This fridge looks great. It seems to run all the time and is much louder than I would expect for a brand new energy star appliance. It certainly cools well and makes ice well. All the equipment is on top, which makes for a much roomier interior, which is very nice, compared to my old fridge. Overall, I'm pleased with it, and glad I went with the Cafe line.
We had a 48" side by side Cafe refrigerator installed last week. It is handsome looking and seems to cool well, but everyone in the house HATES the high pitched loud mechanical sound that emanates from the condenser area. The only time it stops is when we open the refrigerator door. Upon closing, it immediately resumes. The sound drives us out of the kitchen, which is/had been the center of family life. It feels like we are living under high voltage wires with the constant hum of surging electricity. This cannot be good for people's brains or mental health.
I read reviews before purchasing this. They were mixed, mainly because of the inaccessibility of the ice bin and performance issues like LED light failures. I bought it anyway because it was the only 48" fridge available in our area due to the impact of covid on the supply chains. Had I known about the sound, I would have made do with a smaller fridge until other brands were available. I am so SO sorry I bought this Cafe.
Interestingly, the manual addresses the loud sound directly saying "Newer refrigerators sound different from older refrigerators.[...]you may hear a high pitched hum or pulsating sound while it is operating." Nuts to that. This is flat out engineering failure. No one should have to live with this sound.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Newer refrigerators are different, but considering you are leaving your kitchen to get away from the sounds, there may be an issue. We recommend that you take advantage of the warranty and have a service technician out. In the meantime, it may be a good idea to record the sounds to show the technician when they come. Thank you! I purchased in March 2020, but it was August before it was delivered because of Covid! It's beautiful and has enough room, but the icemaker is a mess. It falls freely and constantly out of the icemaker onto the floor and all through the freezer compartment. And the icemaker itself is so loud, it is unbelievable. I can hear it when I come down the steps in the morning, 3 rooms away. It's just a constant vrooom, pretty high pitched sound. Like there is never just quiet in the kitchen, it's constantly making noise. I don't know if the ice cubes falling everywhere is worse or the the constant noise. It's very beautiful overall and fits lots of food. Also, the price was great.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

The Cafe 48" Side-by-side meets my expectation. My previous side-by-side was a Sub Zero. The Cafe installed prefect into my space. If you are looking to replace a Sub Zero, I would recommend the Cafe.
We bought this refer because it was a side by side with no indoor ice or water creating a very clean look. The only thing that we wish was different was the ice maker in freezer. It makes small ice cubes and larger ones would be preferred
