A little under 2 years and 2 major problems
on July 17, 2022

from Waterford, MI
Shortly after the first year of owning this appliance, the fridge stopped cooling in both the freezer and fridge. After 3 weeks before a tech could get out, it was diagnosed as a bad compressor. The compressor was replaced under warranty, but it was a hassle to be without a major appliance that long.
Here I am just short of 2 years and now the freezer can't reach freezing temps. I've run through all the troubleshooting, but no use, it still won't freeze. I've removed the rear panel and found it's icing. This fridge is supposed to have a deicing element, but it doesn't appear to be running automatically. I ran through the codes and the element will turn on, so it's something else.
Now I get to play the waiting game for another repair person and paying for more repairs.

AVOID

I have had this refrigerator for 6 months now. These issues are what I am experiencing so far. 1) The water dispenser leaks 2) The refrigerator wobbles and squeaks when I open either door. It seems the left front wheel is not stable. Adjusting the front wheels does not help. 3) At times I hear a LOUD buzzing from the right side of the unit. Knock in the area of the buzzing and it stops but always returns later on. 4) Replaced water filter with a genuine GE XWFE filter and now all I get is an error code, no water. What happened to quality control with GE?

The worst GE refrigerator

Don't buy this GE refrigerator! The bins on the door don't lock in place and easily fall out! The wheels don't lock in place so the refrigerator moves every time it's opened or closed!!

We are more than happy to provide guidance with your new refrigerator. We have provided leveling instructions at the link below for this refrigerator to avoid constant moving when the unit's doors are opened and closed. As we continue to make improvements to our appliances, your feedback is extremely important to us. We will pass these comments regarding the door bins along to our product team to review.

Nice but not reliable

Well it's been about 2 years since we bought this fridge , honestly it was great looking and working well for the first two years , unfortunately now it's starting to give us problems , this morning we noticed that the fridge side the lights are very dim and seems like it is not as cold as usual , funny thing is that the freezer side lights are working bright plus so far it's still keeping things frozen , but it just happened and it's hard to tell. Unfortunately if we have to replace the fridge , just going to buy the typical basic top freezer and bottom fridge style no fancy items , crazy how it is just two years old , talk about environmentally friendly appliances , sorry for the rant

Major Design Flaws and Poor Temperature Regulation
on December 25, 2024
Posted by: Anonymous
from Eugene Oregon USA
I deeply regret purchasing this GE refrigerator, as it consistently fails to meet even the most basic quality and performance standards. As a retired industrial engineer with over two decades of experience in appliance assembly lines, R&D, and quality control, I believe I can offer a well-informed critique. Below are the significant issues I’ve identified:
Design and Usability Issues
1. Freezer Shelves: The shelves in the freezer compartment are too small, severely limiting storage capacity and functionality. This oversight makes the freezer impractical for everyday use.
2. Glass Shelf Stability: While the tempered glass shelves supported by wire frames are correctly sized, the internal dimensions of the shelf rests are incorrect. This design flaw causes the shelves to slip or fall during normal use, posing both a safety risk and an inconvenience.
3. Poor Air Distribution: The refrigerator exhibits significant air circulation problems. Items stored at the back of the refrigerator compartment freeze, while those in the front remain too warm. These issues occur regardless of how full the refrigerator is—whether at 30% or 70% capacity—highlighting a fundamental flaw in the air distribution system.
Temperature Regulation: A Critical Failure
Accurate temperature control is crucial for food safety, yet this refrigerator falls short in several ways:
1. Thermostat Inaccuracy: The thermostat consistently displays a temperature of 34°F. However, when measured with a calibrated thermometer, the actual temperature of groceries, drinks, and meats was 46°F. This reading was taken after the refrigerator remained unopened for 24 hours. Such a discrepancy creates a significant risk of food spoilage and unsafe storage conditions.
2. Tolerance Between Displayed and Actual Temperatures: Research has shown that discrepancies between displayed and actual temperatures are common in poorly designed refrigerators, leading to unsafe storage conditions. This refrigerator’s 12°F discrepancy between displayed and actual temperatures is particularly concerning and well beyond acceptable tolerances.
3. Compartment Temperature Variations: Uneven temperature distribution is a persistent issue. Items in the back freeze, while those in the front remain warm. This not only compromises food safety but also limits the usable storage space, as no area provides consistent, safe conditions.
Assessment of Refrigerator Performance Indicator (RPI)
The RPI metric is a widely recognized standard for evaluating refrigerator performance. An RPI value:
• Below 1 indicates superior performance.
• Around 1 suggests acceptable performance.
• Above 1 signals poor performance.
Based on my observations and analysis, this refrigerator’s RPI would likely exceed 1.5, given its inability to regulate temperature consistently, the significant discrepancy between displayed and actual temperatures, and its poor air circulation. This value places the refrigerator firmly in the category of poor performance. Its failure to meet basic quality benchmarks and its subpar functionality align with the worst-performing appliances in industry studies.
Factors Affecting Performance
This refrigerator fails to perform adequately, regardless of external conditions:
• Food Load: Cooling issues persist whether the refrigerator is 30% full, 70% full, or at any other capacity.
• Ambient Temperature: External room temperatures (e.g., 70°F vs. 90°F) exacerbate the refrigerator’s inability to maintain consistent internal temperatures.
• Door Openings: Even with minimal door openings, the refrigerator struggles to regulate temperature properly.
These variables should be accounted for in a well-designed appliance but were clearly overlooked in this model.
Real-World Impact: Food Waste and Safety Concerns
Initially, I suspected the quality of groceries was to blame for food spoilage. To rule this out, we switched to two other grocery stores and spent additional money, only to find the same issues persisted. Living in Oregon, with its mild winters and summers, I expected the refrigerator to perform adequately. Unfortunately, it has failed consistently, resulting in unnecessary food waste and increased expenses.
COVID-19 Considerations
While returning the appliance was an option, the COVID-19 pandemic made this impractical. With my wife being immunocompromised, we could not risk:
A) Being without a refrigerator for an unknown period.
B) Allowing a service crew into our home to fix or replace the unit.
These circumstances forced us to endure the appliance’s poor performance instead of seeking a replacement.
Conclusion: A Failure of Basic Quality Control
This refrigerator demonstrates multiple design and quality failures that should have been identified and resolved during basic quality control:
• Inaccurate thermostat and unreliable temperature regulation.
• Poor air circulation, leading to uneven cooling, regardless of capacity.
• A significant 12°F discrepancy between displayed and actual temperatures.
• Incorrect shelf rest dimensions, causing shelves to fall.
• A likely RPI value exceeding 1.5, placing this refrigerator among the worst-performing models in its category.
These issues are unacceptable in a modern appliance and should never have been allowed to reach the consumer market. For anyone considering a GE refrigerator, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere. Researching independent reviews and performance indicators like RPI can help ensure you purchase an appliance that prioritizes quality and food safety.
