This incident is the first I hear of issues installing a different cartridge than the one from instant ink. It is probably from the cartridge code the printer scans, not recognizing the cartridge. You could try restarting the printer and then give it another shot. If not, a return is the next best choice. Go to www.hp.com/us-en/shop/cv/ReturnsandExchanges?id=page-return-exchange-policy/. Another cartridge is on its way through the instant ink program.
The black cartridge is fine. It's a stupidly designed printer however (OfficeJet Pro 9015e) as you are forced to have color cartridges in order for the printer to work.
