Good Printer/Scanner with Some Frustrations

In general this is a good printer that prints high quality. I use it mainly for scanning and it is above average in that area as compared to my previous purchases. Ink life is great and Brother inks are tolerably priced.
The most frustrating thing about the scanner is the automatic edge cutoff when scanning from the glass. If you place the paper against the guide, where you would naturally place it, the scanner will cut off the top 4mm and 3mm off the edge. Why? So to get a full scan I have to place the 8.5inx11in sheet toward the middle of the glass and scan a ledger sized document then auto crop. Why not just make the guide in the correct place to have no cutoff? Perhaps I just don't understand how to use it.
The next most frustrating thing about the printer is the inability to print a return address closer than 0.5in from the edge of the envelope. I tape a piece of paper to the end of the envelop to trick the printer into printing at the edge of the envelope, 0.125in.
Features that I would love to see in the next model include:
The ability to change scan settings and add to the existing scan file. Currently you can only add pages to an existing, unsaved, scan if you use the same scanner settings. I would like to be able to change from two sided to one sided or from letter to ledger size without having to save the file, change the settings, and scan a new file.
The ability to narrow the single page feed to the size of a business card, or at least to the size of a standard personal check so that I could just load single checks in the manual feeder and print them out instead of having to purchase the, three checks to a page thing.

Scanner Fickle & Print Heads Gum Up

Handy to have oversized image capability, however scanner is fickle. Sometimes scans as portrait, sometimes scans as landscape. There appears to be no apparent default. Print quality also suffers at times, as the print heads get gummed up frequently.

Paper Jam Refuses to Clear

Printer developed a paper jam which will no clear... No paper can be seen anywhere in the printer yet printer thinks there is paper jamming it and will not operate...

Copying is Compromised

The copying function is severly compromised if not used frequently. I have to clean the print heads almost every time I use the copying function. The scanning function works very well.
