For software - Super limited
on March 13, 2019

Functions are too limited for the price compared to similar products on the market. Although the hardware form and qualiy is great, software-wise and its features are so few and unable to do other reasonable functions like no Android OS with Play Store, no apps, no ability to read other file formats like epub, txt, no dictionary built in, no page number selection, no table of contents, no web browsing to read the news, no buying books on it, no monitor function, etc. All it does is read PDFs and it's not even that good considering the cost. Software is way too limited! The only good thing about this is the hardware which I like for minimalism-look, thinness, lightness, and big screen. Best looking device on the market. But software, I give 0 star for minimalism. Funny thing is you can hack it to do much more stuff [risky] to run Android 5, so its massive potential is already there through unofficial support.

Great hardware - limited functionality

I am a university professor and use this to read articles, comments/correct student papers and keep notes. It is great that I have everything in a single place, and it is an excellent way of reading and writing on pdfs.
The major issue, and it is so major that I am giving it up, is the fact that the software is below what would be expected making it very hard to use.
Let is run android and allow apps, a web browser, synching directly with dropbox and native access to the file system and it will be an amazing product that you can use without the need of having the syncing computer close by.
A second best option, is to have a fully fledged android/apple app that can run on a mobile phone.
There are also other minor inconveniences, but this is so major that it overshadows everything else.
Finally, please note that the mobile app is not available in Europe. In an answer to one of the reviews, Sony support points to the support section in this website, however, as of 16/04/2019 the app is NOT at the webpage where other apps can be found.

Fantastic Reader, Horrible Stylus
on August 29, 2017

I purchased the digital paper for school, in hopes to replace my notebooks all together.
The reader itself is absolutely fantastic, and does exactly what it says it does. It is so light weight that I can hold it up to read for hours without feeling tired.
However, the same cannot be said about the stylus. It was under charged the first time that I used it. I could only write while pressing very hard on the stylus. Without any prior writing experience to compare to, I thought that was the only way. So, that was my mistake. But then, after it is fully charged, it became way too sensitive, and started writing when the stylus was as far as a quarter of a centimeter from the reader. And needless to say, the resulting writing was horrible. I didn't bother to recharge it and gave up the stylus altogether after it fully discharges two weeks ago because I was mainly just reading books. Now it is not even charging at all, I have tried both the computer and with my phone adapter, and it only charges for about a minute until the red indicator light turns off.

Storage

16G (or about 12 effective for document storage) is a bit of a joke, even for the purpose of storing PDF documents. System should come with minimum of 32G, ideally 64G, as many technical PDF docs, such as books, can run into 10-20MB and even 100-200MB (in the case of scans). The product's usefulness is in its ability to be able to store an entire library of technical documents, such as books, journal articles, etc, a use case that requires multiples of the current storage capacity.

Great But Needs Improvements
on July 6, 2019

It's a great product but for it to become even greater, the next generation of this device, which is said to be released later this year, could imrove on the following points: Improvements to the stylus: 1- It would be appreciated greatly if the stylus itself could be improved . To hold greater charge/ for longer amounts of time if possible and to shift the charging port off to another place, or to at least have it protected by a cap binder that is more durable . If at all possible, removal of the concept of a stylus that needs to be charged all together . I understand that it is needed for accuracy in note-taking, however, other companies such as reMarkable have succeed in procuring a stylus that is both accurate and does not need charging and I believe that it is also well within Sony's capabilities of making a stylus in that way . 2- Making the stylus a bit more comfortable to hold for extended periods of time . Lighter and less a bit softer to hold could be great improvements
Improvements to the overall device: 1- Sturdiness . The hardware is great but I do not believe that it is durable enough to be carried around in backpacks, which is a disadvantage for many students . 2- Speed . I understand that there are huge limitations to E-ink devices softwares' but if possible, despite these limitations, when turning many pages at a time, the speed lag becomes quite a nuisance . 3- It would also be great if the device could connect to a wifi network directly, without the need for a computer to set up a hub first
And finally, improvements to the app: Would be great if the app was a bit more capable, in terms of the reading and editing experience .
Thank you for reading and if anyone from Sony's customer service is reading this, I would be greatful if you could relate this to the relevant department so that we could maybe see some of these changes in the next generation of this device .
I would recommend this to a friend!

Huge potential, malfunctions after a while

I have the 13.3 model, and I've been using it for 13 months. While it worked, it was a great experience and this is truly a remarkable device. Yet: - it started to have a incredible slow response after 8 months of use (and no, its drive is not full, less than 10% occupied) - there's been only 1 firmware update, without any consideration from Sony to our calls for obvious features lacking (such as index reading) - the most serious flaw: out of the blue, a whole horizontal strip of the screen stopped responding to the pen (or, when it does, it distorts a straight line, take a look at the attached picture).
It COULD HAVE BEEN one of the best products I've had my hands on, but unfortunately it has a weak construction and lasts only enough to go past the warranty time. For this price, that's just unacceptable: don't waste your money on this one.

After about 2 years of use, here are my thoughts

The digital paper has become a part of my daily life for work and school, 2nd in use only to my smartphone or laptop. I am in general quite pleased with it, and the software updates that have added things like table of contents and undo support are good as well. The purpose of this review is mostly to suggest ways to improve it to the engineering team at Sony, who I assume is working on a DPT-RP2 or something.
I'll start with what I think would not be a good idea to change. 1st: I know the 1st version of the digital paper had different software with a web browser built-in. I'm very glad that was removed in the DPT-RP1, because part of the reason I like this product so much is that it is focused on doing what it does and I can use it without it presenting any distractions. I would like that to continue. 2nd: while I do somewhat regularly download PDF scans of old books from Internet Archive and they can be quite slow in page-turning (the files are high-quality scans and often 50mb or so), I would not want the processing power of the tablet to increase if that meant a shorter battery life compared to what it is now. I also wouldn't want the tablet to become much thicker, though a little bit more wouldn't be bad. The ideal would obviously be to be able to increase processing power and battery life in tandem while keeping the thinness the same, which I recognise is difficult. I just wouldn't want unbalanced improvement.
Here are a few things I would like changed. 1st: I really want a Linux version of the software so I don't have to use Windows to transfer files back and forth. Or, even better, I would like the system to not be locked down in terms of the file system, meaning that I could plug it in to my computer and browse it like a flash drive. I don't expect it to support file types other than PDF, and actually I wouldn't want it to. But it's a bit silly to require a program to be installed when it should clearly be possible to just use the OS's directory/file browsing program. 2nd: the USB interface should be upgraded to type C, to both increase file transfer speed and to have a more standardised interface in terms of being able to cable swap. 3rd: I know colour e-ink displays are hard, so I won't say anything about that. But more colour options for highlighting or writing would be good. Green & yellow, for instance. Those should be addressable by a software update, so no need to wait for the next version of the tablet to be release-ready to add those in. 4th: It would be quite handy to have 2 eraser modes in the software. 1 as it currently is, and a 2nd which doesn't erase the whole pen stroke, but only the part touched by the eraser. 5th: the NFC capabilities of the tablet don't seem to support the Yubikey 5. This is a minor point to me, but would be cool to have supported for security as a way to unlock instead of a password. 6th: The ability to add a custom symbol to search for in a text, like a square or cross. 7th: When a file is copied from the tablet to the computer, it should keep the date of last modification on the tablet rather than say it was last modified at the time you copied it. This ties in with the 1st point actually, since having a more open file system would probably fix this.
In terms of things I really like, the zoom capabilities are amazing. People are always impressed when I show them that, and as an electrical engineering major, it's very handy for zooming in on tiny circuit diagrams, for example. I also like being able to see all annotations for a given document in one place. And being able to see 2 documents side-by-side is excellent when I have a notes file open next to a textbook file. I'm glad I can cut and paste writing as well.
My actual rating would be 4.5 stars, but it seems this review form doesn't support that so I'll write it here. In conclusion, thank you for making something excellent, and I hope you will take into account the ideas I've written as you (hopefully) work on the next iteration of this product.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Translation function

Great products with many new innovation. But, for the users in non-English speaking countries, if the digital paper can insert the translation function and adjustable word size, it will be best.
