Must-have tool for the bag!

After seeing this unit at the PGA Merch show earlier this year, I knew I would eventually add it to my bag. I wanted to wait a bit to check the reviews of others since the price is a bit steep to just run out and purchase. No need to delay, this GPS/Rangefinder is the real deal. I updated as soon as I inboxed and have had zero problems with battery life. Very easy to set-up and use, only problem I had was pushing the correct button at first to shoot target, but after 3 holes you get it. Mine went into standby mode quickly and locked into targets better than expected. It does take a bit of time to get used to the lag upon powering up out of the standby mode, but when will you ever need to immediately rush to get your number? Very advanced price of equipment and they packed it all into a small unit that fits perfectly into your hand. Yes it cost more but it justifies itself after one round of play.

Great foray into advanced range finders

If you haven't played with one of these, the first thing you should know is that what you look at through the viewfinder is digitized versus a typical range finder which shows you an actual image magnified by it's lenses. This allows Garmin to overlay the hole layouts, etc. but it does introduce a bit of graininess that results in one thing I miss from my "old" rangefinder - the ability to see your ball at a distance. Because of the graininess this is not very feasible unless you're always in the fairway. Not a huge deal, but notable. Other than that, it is amazing!

Great concept, but ...

The concept is great, but the optics are very poor and deficient. Battery life is very poor also .

Course layout

I have had my Z80 for a couple of years and one of the features I love about it is the fact that I can play a golf course for the first time and know what the layout looks like

Shuts off often

This device goes into hold during rounds often and won't wake up, making it useless for the rest of the day. The menus are slow to navigate. The optics are extremely poor compared to my Bushnell. I find myself using the Bushnell most of the time.

Approach Z80

Have only been using this for a few rounds. Nothing like I have used before. Complete layout of each hole, elevation, a blind pin feature, lay-up measurements and measurements of each green. The learning curve gets easier and easier with each use. A bit on the expensive side but with all the features I believe it is justified considering some rangefinders, without all Z80's features, are just as expensive. I would definitely recommend the Approach Z80.

Great System - some issues though

I love the range finder however there are times it locks up and screen freezes. I would say 90% of the time this thing rocks but I have to admit I feel I have to have a back up just in case.

Battery Problems

I bought this a month ago. The initial charge did not go properly. A solid blue light was on with no flashing red light. The unit got very warm and would not turn on. I unplugged it and tried again the next day and then it worked. All seemed to be working well as I used it for 3 rounds. I recharged it and the battery went dead during the next round. I contacted the seller, but the 7 day return policy had expired. The seller has a 3 month warranty and said he would exchange it if he could find anything wrong. After charging again, it worked for 2 more rounds and on the 3rd, it went dead again. It has an intermittent problem and I'm sure that when the seller checks it, it will be working. Its like the car that makes the funny noise until you bring it to the mechanic.
While it is working, I am generally happy with it. I regularly play on a course with 3 nines. It doesn't automatically pick up the back nine course as you would think that the gps would pick up where you are.
