Exceptional LEGO set!

Just got mine yesterday and I have to say, this set was so fun to build and looks amazing displayed! I think it's genius how the top of the bottle is designed to perfectly align with the masts. The top of the bottle actually keeps the ship secure since it's attached at the bottom only. It was more challenging to build than I expected it to be because you have to build the bottle around the ship. I am pretty meticulous about the alignment of my parts, so getting the masts how I wanted them and putting the bottle together around them was tricky, but I enjoyed this extra effort. After all, it is a ship in a bottle. Oh, and in case you were wondering, the compass in the base can be spun freely, which is a fun added play feature. This is the 4th LEGO Ideas set that I have purchased and it's the first one I purchased that isn't based on an existing intellectual property. If I had the money, I'd buy more LEGO Ideas sets, but I have to be picky about the ones I do purchase. It's safe to say I am completely satisfied with my purchase.

Disappointing

The boat was the only enjoyable part of this build. The pieces count is misleading as the 1x1 round plates for the water consist of over 300 of the pieces. The bottle was poorly designed and used many 2x2 plates were larger ones would have made a more stable model. Again this adds to the piece count which is artificially high due to the smaller pieces being used.
The finished product does make a good display but there are much better choices out there.
Would NOT recommend.

Poor design- misleading item count

When I saw this I thought 'what a wonderful idea'.
Box arrived and thats when it all started to go downhill.
Clear plastic parts are scratched - I don't know why they thought this would not happen.
Bags number from one to four but infact bag three is all of the 'sea' parts (300) - there goes your item count.
The ship is a poor design as there is no interlocking between most of the parts so it can easily fall apart when trying to attach to the bottle base.
Additionally I had three of the clips that attach the sails to the mast snap - either part of a faulty batch or I suspect the rod is not designed to fit the clip. Have never had a problem with parts breaking in all the 40 plus models I have built.
Still waiting for the replacement parts so can't comment on how the finished model will look.
A very good idea let down by poor design. Also expensive when you compare the real item count. Very disapointing

Just awful

Besides coming with a couple of pieces missing, Bag 2 of the set was a clunky build, hard to keep stable and needed to be partially disassembled a couple of times to get the ship to stay anchored properly. While the set is visually very attractive, the design flaws affecting the placement of the ship into the bottle led my son and I to give this build a thumbs down.

Oh no! That certain doesn't sound fun; I'm sorry to hear you've experienced some trouble with your set.

It definitely shouldn't have been that tricky to get the ship to attach to the bottle. It sounds like something was maybe just a little off either on the bottom of the ship or in that section of the bottle. I'd recommend double-checking that all the pieces are in the exact right spot and that they're all pressed together tightly.

As for those pesky pieces, if you still haven't found them lurking in the packaging or elsewhere, don't worry! It's easy to get replacements. Just go to LEGO.com/Service and choose the "Bricks & Pieces" option to get started.

bottle ship

inished it! - brought it to work!
a comment on the building....
i built the bottle part FIRST, then the stand and THEN
the ship....
the stand was a VERY interesting build......
the bottle was a little difficult, as i had to get the orientation
or the "window" parts correct...
lastly - the ship is very cute, but i had a LOT of problems with the sails.....
they kept slipping down and wiggling around...and then i had put something in the wrong place and the sails kept hitting the bottle and the boat wouldn't fit...so i had to figure THAT out....
if it wasn't for the price - i would have purchased two - one for home and one for the office!
all in all - a really nice show piece - but kinda fragile!

Must have set for display value.

As soon as I saw this set online, I rushed to the store the next day and bought it for myself. I mean, it's a LEGO ship in a bottle. Come on, how awesome is that?! It's a straightforward build, broken up into 3 steps. The instructions are easy to understand, however, it can be difficult to make out the clear pieces when making the "bottle" part. Other than that, the only part that can be "challenging" is keeping the masts and sails straight and lined up.
This set looks just incredible on display, and will stay on my shelf for a long time to come.
