Ship in a Bottle
on February 3, 2018

I usually stick with Star Wars sets, but I saw this kit online and had a perfect spot for it. I really enjoyed this kit; A lot of small pieces but still very enjoyable to build. I am most impressed with the bottle. The design and build of the bottom is pretty cool.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Interesting set

I really enjoyed building this set. Building the bottom on the bottle was intriguing. The visual effect is excellent with this set. When I first saw this set I thought it was perfect to go along with the Old Fishing Store Set. I have both in my office. I do agree with other reviews that the ship is small, but I can understand why; the size of the bottle in proportion to the ship.
I have one complaint about this set. It is not very sturdy. In my opinion, this set is not intended to be played with, unless you take the ship out of the bottle. Moving the set requires rebuilding the set (personal experience - multiple rebuilds). The neck of the bottle becomes detached very easily.

Excellent Display

This set is a great as a home display, with these colourful bricks the building is amazing and so much fun.
The only cons I find the price in Canadian $is a little bit high, and the designer could have merged two pieces of WALL ELEMENT 1X4X3 Element 4594686 to form a big piece WALL ELEMENT 1X4X6 this would make the ship more visible.

Great activity for Mum & Dad

The ship in a bottle was clearly designed for a couple, when you need to build at least two of everything.
It was brought as a gift and my partner and I sat down for 3 hours and spent some quiet time helping to piece it together.
I did not believe it was possible for 921 pieces to come out of something that looked so easy, but you got me.
What I also found challenging was the clear Lego pieces, which all had to be built to make the base of the bottle. Silly me thought it came in larger blocks.
But we had fun and it was well worth the money. My only problem is I have children who will destroy it and I'm unsure about taking it all apart just to glue it together or not.

I’m really glad to hear that you and your partner are enjoying this set! Sounds like it allowed for a few solid hours of quality time, which is always great. This set was designed for display not for playability in mind.

We don’t recommend ever introducing adhesives to the brick. Over time the ingredients in those substances could potentially disrupt the integrity of the brick. I would recommend to keep this set high up or on a shelf available for display.

Not impressed with quality control in CLEAR parts

Overall, I had fun with this build. It's really neat to look at, but there is virtually no 'playability' here. The 2 globes spin (whee!) and the compass hand twirls.
Where this set fails and why I cannot recommend it to friends and family is the fact that the bottle parts came out of the box looking scratched and dirty! Some parts I was able to clean with a little soap and water, but some are definitely scratched. This is disappointing. Also, a handful of the clear bricks that make up the bottom of the bottle weren't crystal clear. In fact, I'd describe them as 'yellowing'. This is very apparent when you spread all the parts out on a white surface...you can literally sort out the 'iffy' ones.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Unique, but disappointing !

I was extremely excited for this set because of both the design and display aspect. The price seemed appropriate until I received the set. The box is rather small but I do enjoy the design of it(opens upward) and imagery. The build begins with ship which I did not find impressive at all. Simple and quick, not special in any sense. The bottle portions were very unsatisfying and I was really disappointed by this. Piecing together the small translucent pieces was the only difficult part for me because my eyes crossed and spun in the back of my head the longer I looked at them. The base which has compass is probably the coolest aspect in my opinion, yet the bottle and ship sit right above compass. Unfortunately not a must buy.

Please display me!

This has got to be one of the coolest things Lego has done in awhile or maybe even ever. With an almost 1:1 scale for size the bottle alone is really cool and if you ask me the star attraction. Getting a huge number of translucent pieces is always fun but once you finish the bottle you just stop and appreciate how close it looks to an actual bottle. During building however you will need extreme patience, in order to create a purposely non-see through bottom like most bottles, you will be assembling tons of 1x1 and 2x2 plates that have a flimsy build up until you finish the actual bottle itself that can get very frustrating during assembly, but don’t let it frustrate you, the end product is worth it I promise. The details and building techniques that went into this are clever and at some points very simple and lead to a refreshingly challenging build that has a look unlike anything you’ve seen, if you or a person you know are a Lego enthusiast and nautical enthusiast this is a must buy set that proudly displays itself wherever you may place it. Oh and did I mention this set has one of the funniest instructions I’ve seen in a Lego booklet. It instructs you to literally dump the 284!!! Translucent blue studs into the bottle which give the end product a really nice look. If you like to display Lego models this is the one for you!
