You put bread in and it toasts the bread...exactly what I bought it for. Toasting is great once you get it dialed in. Only two things that I find a bit negative. 1. While there is a bagel setting, the slots are a bit too narrow to et a bagel in. 2. If you buy Wonder bread or the like the slot is good but if you buy any type of artisan bread the slot is a bit short and half your bread will stick out so you have to rotate the bread and toast again.

This is much better than the cheap crumb spreaders I've previously owned. My gluten free wife uses one half, I use the other, and she doesn't have medical issues with contamination. And the quality is evident, I'm very pleased with this purchase!
