I purchased the Precise Heat Mixing Bowl from Sur La Table a few months ago.
It works very well. I used it to make yogurt. I heated the milk to 200, then let it cool to 110. I added my starter and set the temp for 115 and let it sit overnight. Perfect results. Tempers chocolate too. I do with it had a high/low temp alarm.
I was imaging a bowl like this when I was making Caramel last Saturday, but unfortunately the bowl doesn't even heat to a soft ball stage 240. I wish it would heat a little higher, then it would take some of the watching out of candy making.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I used it many times to proof bread. It works great; however, I found it is very difficult to remove the temperature base from the mixer. Does it have an easy way to remove it?
Just purchased yesterday and read some reviews here. First and only thing tried so far.
1. Instructions are not clear as to setup, particularly if you prefer full manual without a timer.
2. #1 above leads to being unsure of operation. The bowl itself calls for 32-49 degree heat settings to melt soft cheeses. Lacking any recipes in the box, I set it on 49 degrees and waited...and waited....and waited. I could see temp climbing on screen...but at an elephantine pace. I stopped and made sure all was done correctly in terms of mounting bowl (another area that need more clarity) and tried again. I waited until bowl was at 49 degrees but that was much too cool to melt combo of emmenthaler and gryuere cheeses.
At that point I took matters into my own hands and set bowl 80C....and I watched it climb (slowly) to temp. With whisk attachment things were still grainy and lumpy....but much better than previous 49C setting. Finally reset and pegged 99C as target. After usual (longish) wait and screen confirmation of increasing temp cheese started to melt and I was on my way. Things worked out and fondue was yummy.
Tip: when you use paddle or whisk indicated temp drops some. On stopping temp climbs to target again.
I look forward to more use.
I would recommend this to a friend!

I love to temper chocolate and cook up custards and fondue as much as the next cook. But I can't justify the $300+ price tag for something that I already have the equipment to do another way: ie a double boiler or a microwave. Not only that but the average kitchen is 10 by 10 feet. It's bad enough that it's expensive, but it also takes as much space as a large 6 quart bowl? How realistic is that?
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have been cooking almost daily since my husband and I began eating a low carb diet, and I'm forever forgetting to soften the cream cheese. This is perfect for the majority of my dessert recipes (custard, butter pie, cheesecake). It’s easy to use and clean, and it makes many recipes so much easier. Love it!
