Another great Brother Product

I replaced my Brother MFC 495 which was still working fine but kept losing connection to my router, likely due to its age an no more firmware update since 2012 (I believe that was the last one). Even though it was still working, I am glad that I upgraded. I love the scan to email feature. Makes it much easier for my wife who is not too computer savvy. Print quality is similar to the older 495 model. It also allows for shortcuts for easy scan options and allows the option to add a PIN for added protection prior to scanning to a source. I knocked a star off because either the print cartridges that come with it are almost empty or the printer uses a lot of ink. My Cyan ran out in no time. Also, as others have stated, it makes a whirring noise when scanning. Aside from that, I really like the printer. And, it stays connected to my router.

Wireless is Wonderful!

We had an older workhorse HP inkjet that finally just broke. It had an ink cartridge hold down made of plastic that just gave out. Worthless after that. And it was not wireless. After reading reviews on this Brother MFC-J895DW, we knew what printer we would get next. We waited for it to go on sale and the wait was worth it! With all our wireless devices in the house, I only wish we had bought a wireless printer eons ago. It does seem to use ink pretty readily, but cartridges are reasonably priced and more importantly, easy to change. I'm also impressed with the features and the quality of this Brother product.

Actual operation is very good--print quality quite good. Set up instructions could have been easier to understand, but we finally got it working.

Doesn't Always Talk to Windows Well
on April 17, 2020

I like to give this printer a good review, but I can't. There is some sort of software issue going on and it doesn't talk to Windows very well. Sometimes it prints, sometimes it doesn't. It's unreliable in that manner.

Overall my MFC-J895DW works well. However "Low Ink" warning starts many days in advance of actually needing to replace ink. Not critical just anoying.

Fast Printer, but occasionally Paper Jams

I am overall very happy with the Brother Printer I purchased. Printer is fast from my laptop. Once in awhile the paper will jam, but is generally easily fixed. Overall, a solid printing machine.

It does use a lot of ink!

In the reviews I read before buying a Brother printer, a consistent comment was about how much ink they used. I finally bought one in part because of Consumer Reports review, price, and how bad could the printer ink usage really be. As I've learned, it does use ink quite notably faster than my prior (non-Brother) printer, and the ink is rather expensive. I haven't found anything cheaper. Honestly, it's conceivable getting a new printer more conserving on ink costs might in the long run pay for itself.
The quality of the printing is fine, but the printer is a bit noisy and the paper tray less convenient to use than my prior printer.
Sorry, but I'm sure you will never publish this review, but I need to be honest.
Response from brother-usa.comBy BrotherCustomer ServiceJune 15, 2020
Hello, stated page yields for genuine Brother cartridges are based on the ISO testing standards. The number of pages that can be printed with a cartridge is affected by several factors, including paper size, number of pages per print job, amount of print on each page, font size, and print content (graphics, charts, etc.). Print jobs with large text fonts, graphics, charts, and/or large amount of solid coverage (black or any given color) will use much more toner and will shorten the life of the toner cartridge.
