Poor design - Whirlpool you can do better

I bought this microwave (model WMH32519) because it closely matched many of the features I liked on my old Whirlpool OTR microwave which finally died after 22 years of fault-free operation. What I discovered (after installation because there was no way to know prior to installation) was that the stovetop light is dim and positioned so far back that it lights the back wall but that's not where the light is needed. It is needed so that all four burners on the stove (front and back) are WELL lit. Whirlpool refers to it as a 'Microwave Hood Combination'. One main function of a stove hood is to light the entire surface of the stove beneath it well. Whoever designed this must never cook or they would know putting the light that far back is not going to fulfill that function. Reducing the number of stovetop lights from 2 to 1 is also a bad functional design choice. The light inside the microwave is also dim. Another thing I was unaware of is that the recirculating exhaust vents straight up from the top of the microwave. So it is blowing warm and moist air on the cabinet above which is not good for the cabinet. Also the opening for the recirculating exhaust is not covered by a protective grille so there is nothing to keep dust, debris, insects from getting into the cavity from which the air blows and where the charcoal filter is located (see pictures). Not only would a protective grille help keep the that cavity clean, it could have been designed to deflect the air coming from the vent at an angle away from the cabinet above. BTW the center portion of the exhaust vent is the only location along the entire vent that air blows out of. The openings to the right and left of the center of the 'grille' do not blow air so why leave them open and exposed? It is obvious that Whirlpool did not have the customer in mind when deciding to cheapen the lighting and vent. I'd really like to uninstall the microwave and send it back but what I have found in researching other brands of OTR microwaves is that many of them use the same parts so most now have also changed to using only a single stovetop light in the very back and have open/exposed recirculating exhaust vents. My guess is so many customers place more importance on how an appliance looks that it incentivizes the manufacturers to focus more on aesthetics rather than making a practical designed product that does the job it is meant to do well and also lasts a long time.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Not as satisfied as I'd hoped

Changing the clock settings was a bit of a hassle, but completed it nonetheless.
After a month, it started making this loud humming noise during each use, yet will be charged for having someone look at it. Today is 12/30/2024.

A Hundred Candles Would Heat Food Better

It doesn't have automatic time settings, therefore pushing the number '1' doesn't automatically turn on the microwave to heat for one minute. You have to enter exactly how long you want food to cook, and then push 'start.' Despite its wattage, this appliance does a poor job heating food. I often have to heat cold food multiple times, or longer than 5 minutes just to get food close to being hot. The color of the clock is a dark blue against a black background. Therefore, it's necessary to stand close to the microwave to actually see what time it is. This is why most other microwaves have a neon green color to the digits on the display. Overall, I wish I could've picked a different microwave unit. It's one of the worst I've even owned.

Microwave is not functioning properly

Great OTR microwave

I luv luv the rack included as i used it often when preparing large meals. This replaced a 43 year old Kenmore wall microwave so hope it lasts 10 + yrs as some have noted.
