5 stars out of the box; hate the update to One UI

I am a 51 year old male. I’ve been a devoted consumer of Galaxy S smartphones since GS3. For me, the Galaxy S line has always presented the perfect combination of elegance and flexibility to customize the phones. I recently purchased a Galaxy S9 and received it a few days ago. It is stunningly beautiful, and when I turned it on, I immediately fell in love with it; it was everything I expected. I couldn't have been happier and was very satisfied with my purchase until I completed all the updates and ended up with One UI. I could not have been more disappointed, especially with the icons. All the non-Samsung icons look just as they did before, clean, professional, and mature. But the Samsung icons and the colors look like they are designed for a child, a very young child, and they are not aesthetically pleasing at all. The best thing about the phone now, is not unlocking the screen. In Contacts, there are too many colors for the bubbles and the colors are kids’ colors. There was nothing wrong with the wire frame bubbles; everything does not have to pop with color, adults use phones too. Last, but not least, it seems the settings have been streamlined too much to the point where you can't even remove or hide things like the silly stickers icon (which also seems like is for a child) in the message space in Samsung's message app; the smiley icon used to be there. I don’t know if the settings were removed, or they’re actually there, and discovery of them just isn’t as intuitive as before. I want to be able to customize to my liking as in the previous versions. I can’t express my displeasure with One UI enough. I hate to say it, but the now, since the update, the phone feels like an iPhone. If I wanted an iPhone I would’ve bought an iPhone. I recently listened to a very well known tech podcast, and the host used language very similar to mine about what I now know is One UI in his description of the GS10 UI. I didn’t think much about it because I thought it was probably specific to the GS10 and not the GS9 I was getting… he was right.
Since I've been Galaxy S fan, I never thought about buying a phone from another brand until now. I’ve seen many reviews and comments, and there are a lot of others that feel the same way I do about One UI. Samsung please, please pay attention to what we are saying! You make the best, most beautiful and mature hardware, and your user interface and software has to match it.

Hard to get used to.

Okay we made a big jump when we went from a 3 to the 9. I find the learning curve frustrating. This phone is so different. My texting doesn't seem to work logically. I am still trying to set up notification rings that just don't seem to be working the way I like. Moving pictures into albums seem to be more complicated than on the 3. Guess by the time I get really comfortable with it I'll need to up grade to a phone that can access the 5g that will be offered.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Removed the abolity to block phrases in messages, I'm now getting spam texts from throwaway numbers at every hour of the day, and I run a business so I can't just block all unknown numbers without torpedoing my livelihood
And to add insult to injury the predictive text feature is basically unusable since you have to get the first letter right for it to guess correctly
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I do not want to persuade anybody to use it but it does done well on all feature that I needs such as Camera like a pro snapshot, quick and great smooth processor also has most important thing us long lasting battery ( I'v been useing Mid mode and HD screen mode and shut off all background app). I had been compared S9 vs X, the result is S9 has 1 steps on all hardware and abilities more than X but X has still greatest design and smooth OS, looks gorgeous. Finally I have willing every body to try S9 for one day.
After how many years my husband and I switched to Samsung since it contains a lot of features. Its actually not so hard to switch cause its really user friendly. I am actually a camera addict that's why I really loved it, especially the AR Emojis! My friends also love it when I use it while I'm taking a video and singing my favorite songs for my hubby. I can actually use it all day without charging. There was a time when it logs but its pretty fine, you just have to wait a second or 3. Overall I really love it. I am actually recommending this to my friends already.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I could share my disappointment with the overlarge size of this phone, the lack of responsiveness on the touch screen, the inflated price, lack of hi def and the unbelievable amount of bloatware on it... But all of that pales compared to the disaster than is Bixby! Not only do I not want it, finding out that Samsung has dedicated a button to it that interferes with the volume buttons about half the time - adjust the button and here's Bixby telling you that you haven't yet set things up.
This phone went back for a refund and I had my old Galaxy S5 reactivated. Unless and until Samsung fixes this Bixby nightmare, this might me my last Samsung phone. What a complete disappointment!
Cons: Too big, Not high def, samsung's bixby is a disater
