[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have been using the X1 Carbon for three months now and I have been thoroughly impressed by the performance of the laptop. This is my first laptop that utilizes a SSD and I was blown away by how fast it loads up to the home screen. With a 512 GB SSD, I'll never have to worry about running out of space. The i7-8550U CPU is also more than enough for some of the high-intensive tasks that I run on a daily basis (such as gaming or compiling code). The build quality and design is also spot-on! I love the feel and tactile feedback from the keyboard. The laptop's lightweight size truly makes it an "ultraportable" as I can easily carry it to my classes when compared to the previous bulky laptops that I owned. Despite the laptop's high quality, there are a few issues that I have with it. One is in regards to the sound output from the speakers. They are mediocre at best, and I am disappointed that the quality of the speakers aren't up to standard with the rest of the laptop's great specs. Another issue may vary for others, but it is in regards to the battery life of the laptop. I am never able to use the laptop up to Lenovo's advertised life of 15 hours. When using the laptop on battery, I typically do not use any intensive programs which puzzles me when my battery can only last up to 8 hours at most. Overall though, I am still very satisfied with my purchase and would easily recommend the X1 Carbon to others.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Really nice, fast computer and really great price at CostCo. I will mention the things I'm not wild about, but that is in the context of really liking the computer.
First, I miss having a numeric keypad, but I knew it didn't have one when I bought it.
Second, one of the main reasons I bought the computer was that the keyboard got rave reviews. Well, it does have a good touch, but I'll never understand why engineers think we won't mind if they move the special keys. The CTRL key is too small and in the wrong place. Similarly, they messed with the size and position of the backspace key, arrow keys, page keys, home key, end key, etc. It's hard to really love a keyboard when you have to look at it anytime you need a special key. Touch typists know where all of the keys are without looking, not just the letters. DON'T MOVE THEM OR CHANGE THEIR SIZE. There's also something about the keyboard that makes me always position my hands too far to the left if I don't look.
Third, the micro SD card slot is inconvenient to access and just looks cheesy. I haven't tried it, but it looks like it will be hard to insert the card.
The track pad isn't as good as on Mac's, but I'm old school and use a mouse anyway.
However, having said all that, I really like the computer. It is well built, fast, and amazingly light. The screen probably won't win any contests for those enamored of nits and pixels, but it's fine. I've only had it a few days, but at this point I'd definitely buy it again, especially if I could get it at the CostCo price.
