[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Very lightweight. Great for traveling. I switched over from a previous Lenovo as well as a Macbook Pro and I am enjoying this computer during the first few weeks I have owned it.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this laptop to use for my MBA program. I wanted something lightweight and would last me the entire day. As a side note, I use the 2019 iPad Air with an apple pencil for note taking.
Overall, the laptop is sufficient.
Pros:
Lightweight
Just the right size
Keyboard tactile feel is great
I love the camera shutter
Cons:
Fingerprint scanner is slow if it works at all. You might be better off using a PIN for your windows hello login.
Even with all of the firmware patches, the computer fans seem to run often.
Computer fan can be loud
BIOS is locked
Other thoughts:
I honestly wish the BIOS wasn't locked. I understand that for business use cases, this should be the norm. However, as a personal power user, I want full access to the product I own.
I highly recommend using Intel's XTU to undervolt the CPU to reduce the heat generated by the CPU. I also set a limit on boost short power max and long power max. At default settings, the CPU would go turbo boost and hit thermal throttle in seconds. Once that happens, your fan and heat will hit max and the CPU will throttle. Fans are on 100% for a long time...its annoying...and reduces battery life and probably laptop longevity in the long run.
Additionally, I also got the Lenovo thunderbolt dock with the Nividia 1050 in it. After installing some drivers, I got it operating smoothly with a Dell Freesync monitor. I have it hooked up with a display port cable and the Nvidia drivers recognized the monitor and I have it working like "g-sync" but at a fraction of the cost. If you do this, just make sure that you plug the thunderbolt dock into the dock port and not the usual TB3 port.
Next Gen Improvements:
Since Gen 7 is out, this is really more towards Gen 8.
I want to see:
Better battery life
Unlocked Bios for personal use computers
Better fan control
Better thermals
AMD Zen 2, Ryzen 3000 processors -- Why? We have all seen that the patches to fix all of these Intel vulnerabilities are not minimal. These patches can have huge impacts to CPU performance. It would be nice to have the option as Lenovo already offers on their other product lines.
DDR4 RAM with speeds that are optimal for the ryzen 3000 processors (see AMD presentation for the sweet spot)
Low Power 1080p and 4K screens on all configurations
IR Camera with shutter for all configurations
16, 32, and 64 GB RAM offerings. Or better yet, make RAM user upgradeable
Wishful Thinking:
AMD Ryzen 3000 processors with built in Vega/Navi Graphics. Low power versions of course. Why? I am expecting Augmented Reality to be hitting the workplace in small amounts. Would be nice to have a business laptop that can make use of this.
In Summary, this laptop is OK. Given all of the competition lately, I don't know if this laptop is still the #1 to have as a business laptop. It does check a lot of the right boxes...for now. I bought the Gen 6 over the Gen 7 because there simply wasn't enough of an upgrade over the Gen 6. If Gen 8 doesn't fix a lot of these issues and offer improvements over the competition in the next 1-1.5 years, it may be worth buying a different product.
