The battery lasts forever and the computer is lightning quick. The "docking station" is just OK. My monitor, wireless mouse and charger need to be plugged into the computer directly.
This is a great laptop, improved with each new version. However, Lenovo has failed now for generations of laptops to fix a glaring issue. The main reason we buy Lenovos is the trackpoint feature. Everyone else has trackpads, only Lenovo has the most sensible mouse device for serious typists. But the trackpoint has gotten worse and worse. It is not nearly sensitive enough and you have to push it much too firmly to move the cursor around. This would be a simple software tweak -- why not do it?

To provide some context to this review. I am a software developer / BI analyst and work in a variety of environments ranging from my desk (2 - 24 inch dell 1080p monitors, DAS keyboard, mouse and a dell d6000 dock) to being on the move in meetings and around town. Prior to purchasing this computer I was using a late 2016 Macbook pro at work (I7, 16GB RAM, 512 SSD and 2GB gpu) and an Alienware m17 for personal and contract work (I7 6 series, 16BG DDR4 ram, 970m and a ssd). I purchased the Lenovo with the following - I7 8650, 16GB RAM, 512 SSD, 1440 px screen)
I regularly use the following apps for work, most of the time with multiple apps open at the same time.
-Visual Studio
-SQL Server Management Studio
-Tableau
-Eclipse
-MySQL Workbench
And all the others running pretty much always
-Office 365
-Spotify
-Slack
-Discord
-Putty
-3 concurrent OneDrive sessions
The first day I started using this laptop I had serious concerns. Once I had everything booted up and all the apps open and going there was some serious "throttling" occurring. It was a nightmare, as even the mouse would jump across the screen making the machine unusable. I decided before I would dive in and see what was happening I would update everything via Windows and the Lenovo Vantage software. There were several updates and after performing these this machine has performed like a dream. I am not sure if it was the updates or if it needed to be rebooted. I never had to look any further into it.
It has put to bed all of my concerns, including small screen size, build quality, battery, and overall speed. I routinely have multiple extracts being performed in Tableau which maxes my RAM usage out while actively using SSMS or Visual Studio and it runs as smooth as glass. I downloaded and installed Visual Studio 2017 (all modules) and SQL Server Developer Edition while using Office and designing a dashboard in Tableau Desktop for ~2 hours and still had ~65-70% battery. The keyboard is one of the best I have used on a laptop. Lastly, going from a 4.5 lb Macbook pro to a 2.5 lb carbon, you would not expect it to make a huge difference, but it is simply amazing. The texture of the casing combined with the weight makes it a dream for people with portability in mind.
At this price point you can choose pretty much any machine you want. The x1 is not perfect, but it is so close. If you have the money and use your computer for any duration during the week, you will not be disappointed with the x1. It is the best overall laptop I have ever used.
Overheats when plugged in even with very low CPU usage. The computer gets so hot on the right side you can literally burn your hand there.

All high performance laptops, like this one, have fans to keep them operating at normal temperatures. The normal operating temperature for this device is 150-degrees Fahrenheit. The device will generate heat any time it is turned on, whether doing heavy work or just at idle. Both the processor and the discrete GPU generate heat. The fan is there is maintain optimum operating temperatures. If you are experiencing hotter temperatures than normal, please contact our Technical support team at https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/ for further assistance. We've bought a handful of this 8th generation chipset model. The laptop is great. The only drawback is Lenovo's terribly slow and inaccurate shipping information. It's not enough to negate how good of a business-class laptop the X1 carbon is, but it was bad.

This is the best laptop that I have ever owned. For the past 10 years I have been a Macbook Pro user, but I don't like the new Macs so I decided to move back to a PC. Man am I glad that a buddy recommended that I check out the X1. Best keyboard ever! Super fast and so light that I have to check to make sure its in my backpack. Great job!
There really is no competitor for the X1 line in the space it serves. I buy them regularly and recommend them frequently. However, I have 1 nagging complaint. Why does Lenovo insist on hobbling the Intel 620 graphics with a lousy HDMI port limited to 30 Hz? Try using your nice 90hz 4k display at 29 or 30 Hz. The processor can handle it, but there's no native display port option and the DP on the dock is limited to the same rate as the HDMI port on the laptop. I hope they fix this. While this won't matter for a ton of customers, it matters to me. I work in 4k and I want my display to be a clear 60Hz like Intel intended.
I bought my X1 Carbon 6th Gen about a month ago. I was immediately impressed by the quality and features. I love it even though it was very costly. It took me awhile to migrate my data and learn how to navigate on Windows 10. Better documentation would be helpful. The only issue I have noticed is white noise even when speakers are muted.
