As a full time teacher and trainer going back for another masters degree, I needed exceptional functionality, fast processing, and significant storage. All this in a super light weight package makes for a wonderful work and grad school tool
There are things about this laptop I really love and a few I dislike. I’ve been in the IT field since 1990 and have spent half of my career on the road traveling, so I have worked on more laptops than I can count. Two devices have stood out as my favorite over all the years, Sony Viao and IBM Thinkpad (now Lenovo). When it came time to replace my last laptop which happened to be the Sony I immediately went to the Lenovo X1 carbon. I purchased the X1 6th gen with the upgraded processor, memory and WQHD monitor.
Pros:
• This laptop is a solid, well built device.
• It’s thin, light weight and very portable.
• The keyboard is what we’ve grown to expect from Thinkpads, great.
• The touchpad and pointer device work better than any other on the market.
• The upgraded processor was worth the investment as well as the additional memory. For me the 512 gig SSD was fine.
• The battery life is very good, better than most laptops.
Cons:
• The upgrade monitor is not worth the cost. The screen is clear and crisp but at 100% resolution the icon is so small it’s almost impossible to view. Lenovo recommends the resolution be set to 200% but at that setting the icons look like they something from a Fisher Price toy. Setting the resolution to a more acceptable 150% causes many apps to look fussy. Needless to say, I regret purchasing the upgraded monitor and wish I had gone with the touch screen.
• The keyboard backlight should be configurable. To turn on the light you need press a function key combination. It would be helpful if backlight was activated when the keyboard is touched, with an option to default backlight state.
• A little pricey.
• Takes too long to deliver, 4 + weeks.
Overall, I’m happy with the laptop but the monitor is a real point of contentions and something I’ll have to live with. I did look in to return the laptop for one with a touch screen, but the 15% restocking fee made it prohibitive.
I am an architecture student and I couldn't be happier with this purchase! It holds all the software that I need and runs faster than most of the computers offered at school. I love how light and easy the computer is to transport. This ThinkPad ACTUALLY sits on the desks we use in the classrooms which is definitely a bonus! Thanks Lenovo!!
Adequate performance at a high cost. It is really a status symbol. Looks nice without much going on under the hood.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I *REALLY* wanted to be able to give this laptop 5 stars. The performance is great overall, it is built well, light, charges fast, and the keyboard is perfect.
That being said there is a VERY bad flaw and a couple annoyances:
- S3 sleep mode IS NOT supported under Linux! This means the laptop does not go into a true hibernate mode and in suspend mode the battery will still die after 8 hours or so. It took lots of folks to find a workaround; this took me hours to implement and is not for the faint of heart. Lenovo has always had solid Linux support and I bought the laptop for this exact reason; unfortunately now every time I update the kernel I have to do half an hour of hacking to get this critical workaround in place. This could be fixed by a simple bios update, but Lenovo refuses to budge on this per feedback to their users on the forums.
- Laptop only supports 16GB of RAM. Kinda lame, there is little excuse to not support 32+ these days.
- The "network port" is a proprietary jack. This is extremely stupid design as a proprietary network dongle is now needed to use this. Why not just add another USB 3.1 port and be done with it, giving the user more expandability and not have a nearly useless jack just to have ethernet?
- It would be nice if the sliding camera cover actually covered the lenses; mine only lets you move from regular camera to IR camera. A simple design change would have allowed both as well as allow covering for privacy.

This is a lite but tough laptop for working. Easy to carry, thin body and amazing keyboard. It has all the important characters a portable working laptop should have.
I purchased this laptop for both work and school purposes. I am a graduate student completing a degree online and have my own business that I run strictly out of my home and laptop. The machine's processing power is amazing. The screen resolution is awesome, speed is unparalleled and overall has improved my work and school capabilities. Would highly recommend to anyone.
The only is that some applications are not equipped to deal with the Thinkpad X1 Gen 6's quality. For example, I attend class in Adobe Connect and they are not able to support anything above 15 or 20 fps so I have to connect a crappier webcam via USB to attend the class and be able to access the video function. However, I don't think you can really fault a company for creating a product that is too "advanced." Think Adobe just needs to catch up.
I've only had the computer for a few days so limited time to form an opinion.
It's sleek, it's light, it's powerful, it has a good feel, solid build quality, good keyboard design (except one little thing - see below for details), and the screen resolution is very good. Setup was a breeze.
The only complaints I have are price, fingerprints, and the placement of the CTRL key on the keyboard.
The CTRL key is located just to the right of the FN key, which is located in the far left lower corner. On all other keyboards I use, the CTRL key is located where the FN key is on the X1 Carbon. So I keep hitting the the FN key when I mean to press the CTRL key on the X1 Carbon. Just something I have to get used to.
The exterior surface material is a matte finish, rubberized material and I notice fingerprints after I use it. Also, the palm rests seem to show oils from my palms after use. It cleans up easily, but that's annoying to look at on a brand new computer.
Lastly, the price is steep compared to comparably equipped computers. But you get what you pay for and I like this unit better than the competition offerings.
