I bought this laptop because I have always been a fan of the ThinkPad line up. And this year I needed a reliable, portable and fast laptop for school. It is also used as my personal laptop. It’s very light and looks very nice, I’m sure it can take some drops as well. The X1 Carbon exceeds my expectations in every way!
I bought this to replace a 3 year old earlier generation X1, which was my favorite laptop.
Unfortunately, while form factor and display are still great, they completely botched the trackpad. You have to firmly mash the left click button with to fingers for clicks to register. That makes it very annoying to use as an actual laptop.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I bought this a couple of weeks back. Powered it on, and the first thing I hear is a loud noise from the fan. And I must say it was quite loud, enough for me to call customer support. Set it up in the meanwhile as I had work to catch up with.
A day later, the noise has stopped. It only would start in certain situations, but I haven't been able to address a pattern for the fan to start. At present, the laptop works perfectly fine, and I have been satisfied with the product, but I need to mention that I have not put it to heavy use, so I am not commenting on its performance. As compared to my previous laptop (Lenovo Y510p), this one is a breeze to carry and use.
Overall, my impressions of this computer have been good, and I have been happy, but the fan is noisy and something I would not expect from a laptop of this caliber, especially when I am in a meeting!
I was in the market for a laptop that was smaller and lighter than my 17" Toshiba but just as powerful. I am an academic and needed something that could handle visual displays (and their construction) for powerpoint presentations for in-class lectures, and conversion to audio-visual mpgs for online presentations. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon met my needs and then some. I purchased a "woman-sized" OGIO backpack (it is perfect for my laptop and also has a storage pocket for my power cord and ThinkPad mouse). This allowed me to leave my big old laptop and wheeled luggage at home so that I can travel across campus with ease. I am very pleased with the laptop visual display (I wish that classroom projectors were as good), keyboard (positive and comfortable start), quick start, and storage. Aesthetically, I have to add, it pleasing to the eye.
I bought this three weeks ago for mostly business. It's been awhile since I've owned a laptop and it amazes me how light and thin they have become. Overall, its been a great machine. As others have mentioned, there is a lottery game with the keyboard. Upon arrival, my down arrow key popped off. Wouldn't stay on. Word of advice, get at minimum, the one year on site. Fortunately I did, and a repair rep came out and replaced my keyboard. That being said, I think its ludicrous a $2,000 machine would have this basic QC issue. Hence, one star deduction.
