Good, But Not Great

My rating is actually closer to a 3.8 but that's not an option so rounding up to a 4. There were a few things that concerned me before purchasing.
On forums users have expressed several issues like overheating, inconsistent display quality, inconsistent keyboard feel, trackpoint drift as well as a few others. I got an i7-8500u w/ 16GB RAM and a 256GB SSD.
I've been monitoring my temps and I've rarely seen it go over 70 Celsius, although I haven't used it for anything more intensive than having several Chrome tabs open, playing 1080p video and basic Excel work so your mileage may vary depending on usage. The HDR display is great, gets nice and bright and colors look very rich and vibrant without being overly saturated.
Unfortunately I do have a few gripes/issues. Foremost being that the keyboard is just okay. It's not terrible by any means, but compared to a T410 and W541 it's falls far short. And you may think that's an unfair comparison because those aren't ultraportables and have more space available for deeper key travel, but I've compared it to my business ultraportable from an American manufacturer and it isn't better. I think the issue is the actuation force. It seems to be too low where it feels kind of mushy to type on.
My other gripe is the trackpoint isn't as good as the one on the T410 and W541. Those felt far more precise and responsive. Still better than other manufacturers attempts at a pointing stick but I feel like it's regressed.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

This is the best laptop-purchase experience I have ever had. Like this product so much, so the fingerprint does not response as quickly as the one on cell phone, it is convenient and safer.

Very nice high end laptop

I was looking to replace a heavy and old Laptop that had started to show its age. After some research I chose the ThinkPad X! Carbon. I like the speed of the new Core i7 and HDD and the screen is very vivid and bright. Some years ago I had used ThinkPad's and I had forgotten how much I liked the red pointer device - I'm already relying upon it instead of the touchpad. I already have a collection of USB-C devices which work well with this laptop, and I appreciate the selection of other useful ports. The lightweight design is much appreciated - it feels 1/2 the weight of my previous laptop. The only negative is that the X1 was expensive - but good things like this don't come cheap. Overall I am very happy with the X1. Knowing what I do now I would have no hesitation about buying it again.

CPU usage is high all the time and fan noise
on December 25, 2018

It's constantly making excessive fan noise and CPU speed while on AC power. Then the laptop becomes extreme hot. Even when you unplug the cord the fan noise would slowly go down, but the CPU speed is still on Max. Try the online support power configuration patch, but it didn't really work. And also the CPU utilization and disk usage would oscillate for no reason.

Lenovo appreciates you taking the time to share your comments and concerns.
All high performance laptops, like this one, have fans to keep them operating at normal temperatures. The normal operating temperature for this device is 150-degrees Fahrenheit. The device will generate heat any time it is turned on, whether doing heavy work or just at idle. Both the processor and the discrete GPU generate heat. The fan is there is maintain optimum operating temperatures. We apologize for the inconvenience caused. We recommend utilizing our Lenovo Vantage app by making sure all of your drivers are up to date. This will ensure your systems performance level. There is also a quiet mode option you may choose within the app to turn on. Go to hardware settings, power, then switch from high performance to quiet mode. I bought this a month ago, and it's perfect for my business. Very light weight, so I can take it back and forth to work. Lots of battery life, so I dont need to move the charging cable with me everywhere. Super fast! Very happy with my purchase.

Good but a long way from where it should be

It's good enough to become my new work laptop.
The good:
- stereo mic.
- fingerprint reader, works well most of the time. Has trouble in the morning for some reason.
- USB-C (charging works through dongle or with apple adapter, but complains about it on boot and during charging - keeps asking for original adapter)
- touchscreen is very good and very responsive, but also has trouble in the morning, it's like my fingers aren't registering as human yet when I wake up?
- virtually no @lenovo bloatware, only Vantage and that's actually useful
- it is so light you can carry it on your breath. Extremely portable laptop, you can safely grasp it with 2 fingers and wave it around and yet it doesn't feel like it's ready to break.
- keyboard is good and clicky but not loud.
- built-in webcam cover is awesome, and physically cuts off camera access.
- built-in mic blocker is a cool idea, but....
The bad:
- ... in practice, the mic blocker is software based and not hardware based which means there's no way to use it on Linux and no way to physically cut off the mic when you want to be 100% sure it's not listening.
- touchpad is clumsy, inprecise. It's something about the plastic texture that makes touchpads bad. Luckily the laptop has like 15 input methods (joystick on keyboard, three buttons above touchpade, button inside touchpad, plus it's multi gesture) so it's configurable for everyone.
- battery (5 vs advertised 15h). This was the hardest to swallow. Maybe on idle it would pull off 10 hours, but in use, with 2 browsers of 20 tabs or so total and Slack and maybe an app or two more, it lasts 4-5 hours or so. Throw in a virtual machine and you're down to 2 hours.
- graphics performance (barely runs Warhammer: Total War 2 and Endless Legend) on max perf mode.
- slippery feet, will slide around on a smooth surface. Not suitable for incline (careful, treadmill deskers!).
- cursor key / pgup+pgdn placement is downright dumb and almost impossible to get used to. I still skip pages of text accidentally all the time, trying to go up or down a line.
- some keyboard lights are always on and can't be shut down - ESC, Mic, and power. This gets in the way when watching movies at night or similar.
- camera quality is abysmal. Like taking photos / videos underwater. External webcam recommended.
- The fan can get pretty loud in a very quiet environment
I would recommend this to a friend!

Loving this laptop. It's light as a feather, the screen is sharp, the battery lasts all day and the keyboard feels great. Not to mention, it's got plenty of muscle. I am doing some heavy-duty software development on this and it isn't breaking a sweat.
