Bought this for 4 wheeling in my Jeep. Love the size, 40 watts of power, uses repeaters and that I can purchase a cable to program on a pc. Real performer!!!

MXT400

I have programmed many radios for amateur radio use and government radios for my job as well. The MXT400 was simple to understand. The GMRS frequencies are already programmed as channels. I bought the 40-watt MXT400 to use as a base station due to its higher power. I have 15- watt MXT115s in my family vehicles. This combination is working well as the MXT400 is larger and less suited to installing in sedans whereas the MXT115 is compact and light.
So far, I get clear to noisy communications up to about a 10-mile range line-of-sight (simplex) from base to mobiles in Las Vegas, NV depending on obstructions. The radio is sturdy and should last many years. Sound quality is good and on par with ham radios.
Midland includes user manuals on its website as I prefer to study the manuals on my PC screen. A bigger challenge is navigating the FCC website to apply for and get your GMRS license even for a retired federal employee such as myself. Any tips Midland could include for novice users to apply for their license would be helpful.

I bought this for my polaris general xp, i custom built a waterproof box for it and it worked great! Looks slick with the tiny antenna it came with! Super clear transmission even at long range! Going to buy another for my camper for a base camp radio!

This radio blew my mind the first time I used it. The most range I’ve ever gotten from a GMRS radio. I was able to talk to a friend with another MXT400 who was over 10 miles away in a decently wooded area. Don’t forget your FCC license!

I just installed this radio in my truck. Very impressive radio. The range talking to my wife who was using a Garmin Rino inside the house and me on the MXT400 on high power was about 7 miles in an urban setting. One of the reviews stated privacy codes did not work. I found that they do indeed work. Follow the manual on setting the codes. I suspect people are using the DCS codes vs the CTCSS codes where you look at the manual and cross reference the privacy code to the frequency you must select under CTCSS. Works perfect.

2010 Subaru Forester

I was able to install the Midland MXT400 in my 2010 Subaru Forester. Because of the way I wanted to conceal the radio, I did have to do some modifications to the console storage located in front of the manual shifter. I had to remove many pieces to to go the parts, but the overall look is exactly what I wanted. I could not be any happier with the way the install turned out. I also used the low profile 6db gain antenna and mounted it to the front hood and ran both the power (direct to battery) and antenna cable through separate firewall locations.

I received this radio 2 weeks ago. It is temporally using a Tram 1170 UHF mag mount antenna. The SWR is at 1.1 to 1. (Previously tuned to GMRS frequencies. With the antenna centered on my roof. Ford f250.
I was using it on Long Beach Wa. On low power I was consistently hitting a repeater in Astoria Or. I had tried it on medium pwr, 22 watts, but that was not necessary as long as I was on the the beach. This is a distance of approximately 20+ miles. I do not know the height of the repeater in Astoria.
Hope this helps.

MXT400 - Awesome Radio

I bought this because several other members of our Jeep club have GMRS radios. I wanted a radio that had high watts, because there are times when we are overlanding that I want that extra power for further range. I have it installed in the Jeep along the right side of the center console and liked the quality and reliability of it that I purchased a Midland CB to communicate with the other members that don't have GMRS.
