MXT400VP3 is a great little radio. Put it on a power/swr meter showed 1:1 SWR and 63 watts in 40 watt mode. Only complaint instruction book says nothing about using the 2nd set of channels by tuning the knob farther after simplex channel 22 to display to change to see +/- and Rp mode display in the window for repeater mode.

We have had a pair of MXT400's for a week or so. They appear to have very sensitive receive capability. I have been able to pick up an individuals FRS (1/2 watt) Radio Shack wireless intercom from 28 miles and they only have a short antenna inside the house. The only concern is that you can only set the PL or DPL tones for both receive and transmit on the same tones. Some repeaters have different tones for input and output. The work around is to transmit the tone to open the repeater and use the open receive (no squelch) for receive.

I like this radio and it is the second one that I purchased, but they receive poorly! A simple hand held radio receives better than these radios on a magnet mount that is recommended and properly tuned on top of my pickup truck. I had one in my truck in Fall of 2018 in Northwoods WI and a guy standing beside my truck with a hand held radio was picking up another hand held a few miles away and my mobile wasn't even receiving the signal at all.

This is a nice radio for simplex usage. It's inability to have separate privacy codes for transmit and receive severely limits this radio because many repeaters use split codes.

TX/RX distance is great! PL code problem w/ other radios! We use 15.7 or 462.55 PL 85.4, we have found either the MXT400 has an issue or our other radios have an issue, not completely sure, just being honest. The radio so far has been impressive, however when we use PL codes Reception on the MXT400 becomes sporadic, sometimes it works and then other times it doesn't, for now we are using just the channel with no code, the radio works great this way, very impressive distance, it is connected to a Diamond 50a fiberglass whip and SWR is fantastic. We did try a completely different radio to test the PL problem and the MXT400 worked fine when contacting a Motorola, but Baofengs not so good for some reason? Now we just need to find HTs that will work with the MXT using PL codes.

So far, not sure if it's really any better then the MXT115, which I purchased right after t he 400. It's a bigger radio so if anything, the extra power is fine even if it's missing what I consider one of 3 important items it SHOULD have come with. 1. No 12v accessory plug/cable. Sure, it has a fused cable but seems someone forgot to pack the accessory plug end of the cable. This comes with the MXT115 2. No antenna. Ok, again, the MXT115 comes with one, this does not. I used both radios on my purchased antenna. They seem the have the SAME distance. 3. 400 has no WX channels. Again, the MXT115 does. Why this feature was ignored kinda makes the 115 a better option for outdoor use.
Just saying, the radio itself is fine. If all you care about is the power, and ok with picking out and buying your own radio, go for it. But IMO, the MXT115 is a MUCH better deal, has about the same range from my tests and comes with a much better out of the box experience and features.

I bought the radio a few weeks ago and I love it. It has an amazing range. I was able to receive and transmit at about 8 miles + so far. There were trees and hills between us. It’s just what I was wanting.
