The Infuser past and present.

The infuser i have is an older model purchased January 2013. It does not have ability change brew temperature but it does have PID and pseudo pressure gage. It has programmable 1 and 2 shot buttons as well as manual shot control. It also has a separate hot water nozzle. My understanding is the newer model has ability to adjust brew temperature +,-4°F in 2° F increments from the default. That alone is enough to give it an extra star assuming it actually works. Things I wish work better or that were added are: 1) adjustable hot water temperature dispenser; 2) faster steam more power steam delivery; 3) hotter cup warmer; 4) built-in shot timer; 5) OPV control; 6) true brew head pressure gage; 7) a bigger water tank the current one is only 64 ounces.
All in all the Infuser was a good buy and produces a capable double shot. Producing a single shot however is not as capable but it's my understanding that the same with most espresso machines. If I were at the same point in my coffee knowledge journey as I was when I purchased this model I would buy again. However being where I am now I'm not sure because even though newer models have ability to change brew temperature it is not easy to do and requires the pressing of several buttons with no visual confirmation of the change being made.

A High-end Disappointment
on March 7, 2020

I have owned my Breville Infuser for 4 years, during which time I have come to regret having purchased it. As a coffee enthusiast and former barista, I felt that buying a home espresso machine was a worthy investment, and the reviews led me to believe this machine would be worth my time and money. Unfortunately, this has proven not to be the case. The infuser will not (and has never been able to) build enough pressure to pull quality shots unless I use a dual-walled filter basket. Despite filling my single wall filter with very fine, freshly-ground coffee and applying the appropriate amount of pressure with the tamper, my Infuser extracts thin "espresso" with no crema or body to speak of. Even when using the dual-walled filter basket, the results are inconsistent--the crema is frequently comprised of large bubbles, creating an unpleasant texture and making it impossible to create crisp latte art. Even worse, the machine will randomly ignore the extraction time I've programmed and continuously pour water through the portafilter until I hit a button to make it stop. Perhaps I was simply unlucky and have been using a defective unit, but I would avoid this product. I would give it just one star, but my years of frustration with it are partially my fault--I should have returned it instead of trying to make it work.

Great coffee from a small Footprint

My Breville Double Boiler quit after eight years at least. This is the longest lasting by far of my now 5 machines. I was tempted to get another but counter space was an issue and the Infuser fits well and allows room for other paraphernalia. I like that it heats faster and makes an almost identical cup of espresso. I think the default heat may be set a tad higher than the 195 i chose on the DB. On the other hand the portafilter which fits tight and never leaks lines up with one spout 30 degrees to the rear which is odd. I don't make 2 cups at a time and I still could, just odd. Also the basket is smaller but deeper so as to actually create a longer pull than I ever got with the double boiler. The automatic "pull" time seems ideal to me. Bottom line it seems very dependable, consistent, makes good coffee and is easy to clean. The steamer works very well if you follow the instructions keeping the wand near the surface of the milk and creates great foam/froth. There have been no leaks. The overflow tray and water reservoir have to be attended to more ofter due to size but the design of both are improved over my old one which I loved. And the magnetically held tamper is always handy in it's spot.

Learning to brew properly is hard given all the variables:
- dose
- basket
- grind size
- tamp pressure
- temperature
- bloom time
- extraction time
- extraction pressure
- yield
The Infuser makes all the extraction-related variables constant for me, making it much easier to learn to dial-in for a perfect cup. I just focus on the beans, dose, grind size, and tamp.
I went with the Infuser because I like to manually grind my beans per-dose, and this also enables me to upgrade my grinder and brewer separately.

Great semi automatic. The programable functions are fabulous. Been making great coffee for several months now no issues. Only thing I would have made different is a bigger water recipient as it fills pretty quickly!

How to descale machine?
on June 6, 2019
Posted by: Tamara M.
Very satisfied with the product, however, there seems to be no clear guidelines regarding the descaling of the machine. I see only that the whole machine should be flushed with water and vinegar in the water container (after having taken out the water filter), and rinsing both through the coffee 'way' (single shot button) and through both steam and hot water. Is that correct? Or should i use the capsules provided by Breville? And if so, where should i put it? Not clear...

Nice machine, but could be a lot better

I've had this machine for about 4 years now, it looks great and with a bit of a learning curve you can make a decent shot of espresso. I had an Itallian brand of machine previously that made a better shot than this. When I broke I choose to get this machine rather than have my old one fixed because I liked the way it looked better. I regret not having my old one fixed.other machine fixed.
To make a good shot of espresso you need to use the double walled filter basket, the machine does not build up enough pressure to use the single walled basket regardless of how finely you ground the beans or how much you tamp it. This machine is just under powered there is no getting around that. You have to use the double walled basket and you have to use finely ground beans and tamp them well. Even then the espresso isn't great, just good. Also don't bother with the pre-programmed settings. Hold the button for 5 seconds, then let it go (putting it in manual mode) then count to 20 or so before pushing the button again to stop it. Breville seems to spend more design effort making sure its machines look good with very little thought to how well they actually function.
I don't use the steam wand often, but the few times I have it has worked fine. Steams milk and with a little practice it gives you the nice fine cappuccino foam.
One other thing I do like is the hot water faucet for tea. I actually use that as much as I use the machine for espresso. I tend to drink coffee in the morning and tea in the afternoon. It is convenient to just put the cup with a tea bag in it under the faucet and fill it up with hot water.
I'm keeping this machine, because it works well enough and I don't want to have to spend the money to buy another one, but if this machine ever breaks down I will not be buying another Breville to replace it.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
